Dona Flor Mata Fina Corona Review

i've never really felt like i needed to write a review for a cigar. most of the time everything i had to say was already said. however, if anything that i've smoked so far could compel me to do so, this cigar would be it.

an arturo fuente rep at a local event was gracious enough to bless me with a sample. at the moment these things are impossible to find in my area, so this was like a gift from god (and i'm not at all religious).

anyway, enough nonsense, here is my very short and simple review of the Dona Flor Mata Fina Corona.

beautiful construction, tightly wrapped, no imperfections

from what i've read, two cuban masters (felix menendez and arturo torano) had their hands in this. the wrapper is a brazilian mata fina leaf, the filler is also brazilian and the whole masterpiece was put together in bahia (which just happens to be home to this fantastic person).

pre light draw was very unique and and cannot for the life of me pin a comparison to it.

the cigar lit easy and stayed that way throughout. it burned very evenly but not too fast, ashed twice, first was roughly 2 inches and second about the same. i let this sucker burn until my fingers were ashy and blistering - completely worth it.

now comes the hard part of explaining how it tasted. the closest thing i could compare it to is a mushroom. think about sautéing a big portabella mushroom, take a big wiff, then add a dash of leather and some cream. in the second half you can pick out a hint chocolate. i've never smoked anything like it.

the aftertaste was a little creamy but mostly nonexistent.

appearance – 10
construction – 10
flavor – 10 (11 if i could)
value – 8 (i think they're in the $10 ballpark on the internet, mine was free )
overall experience -10
overall grade – 9.6

verdict - this thing bumped my old favorite and second favorite (aurora preferido emerald and rocky patel decade) down a notch, and is now at the top of my list. get a box. get two boxes! and send me one.

Nice review! These are tasty Brazilian puros. Try the new Dona Flor Selecao. It's even better, imo!

Nice review. I love mushrooms! I'll have to look into that stick.

NCRadioMan, glad you mentioned this one.

Just had one! This stick was well worth the $5.00 I shelled out. I would say it is on the same level as the Illusione ~88~ just a little more reasonable in price. I will be getting some more.

I'm glad this line is finally getting some recognition. It's been a slow mover in my shop, but I think it is a bit of a hidden gem!

Hmm, I'll have to put these high on my list of to-try cigars.

Re: Dona Flor Mata Fina Corona

I'm not a big fan of these Brazilian puros but I definitely appreciate them, very unique. They're an awesome baseline to compare the Graycliff line against, they have that very organic flavor, grassy, earthy, mushroomy, it's an awesome foundation that all the Graycliffs are built on.

Everyone should try these, very unique smokes!

Re: Dona Flor Mata Fina Corona

Nice review!
I believe these sticks are indeed highly underated, of all the lines I prefer the Dona Flor Reserva and the Aquarius the later of which is significantly more full bodied than the dona flor. Of course the A. Menendez line is in there as well but I found them to be somewhat uninspiring
