Padron 1964 Anniversary Review

Im a newbie here, been smokin stogies on and off for a decade... I dont have a cultured pallet. I like strong cigars, CAO Brazilla is my current fav. Thats a good disclaimer I guess

Back story-
I was kickin the tires at the local B&M 2 or 3 weeks ago and a generous botl gifted me with the smoke. I was thrilled, I dont get to smoke the pricey sticks often so I was saving this puppy for a special event. Weather was sweet and warm, seemed like a good reason to fire it up.

Ive burned a few 6000s and I liked them a lot, thought this would be more of the same only better.

The review-(my 2yo demanded the chicken)

Pulled the stick outa my desk top where it had been resting at 70 deg/65RH for 3ish weeks. Cut it with my Xikar.
Pre light draw was perfect! Smell was spicy Tobac. Had a nice box press and it was hard as a rock(in a good way I guess)

I warmed the foot with my torch and fired 'er up!

1st draw was a shock! Very spicy not what I was used to with the 6000s Ive smoked. Not a lot of flavor past the spice.

It burned more quickly then I was expecting. Almost at once I had a burn problem. In the intrest of science I keep on smoking to see if it self corrected. It did not, so I had to touch up all the way to the last 3rd of the smoke.

1st third was so spicy I didnt get a feel for the flavor.

2nd third was still spicy but I started getting a rich tobac flavor under the spice. Very good flavor... not very complex just good

last 3rd maintained that rich tobac flavor with strong spice.

Conclusion-

I enjoyed this smoke. I would say it was pretty damn good... I smoked that sucker till I burnt my paws.
however I dont think I would spend the ~12 bucks a stick to keep them in my humi.

thanks for reading....

The 1964 is a great stick.. If you like strong cigars, one of my fav is an LG Litto Gomez Diez. Must try if you get a chance!!!

Good review and I agree with your conclusion. Had one yesterday and thought the same thing - very good but not at $12 a stick. Cut the price in half and I would get a box.

Thanks for the review! I've been trying to get my hands on some of these via c-bid, but people keep bidding them up to full retail and above.

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary

I know I'm in the minority here, but I find these and all Padrons over-rated.

The reason - I like a very smooth fragrant and "refined" smoke. The Padrons I have tried have all been of the rustic and very earthy variety, tending to be on the rough- and-ready side.

About a year ago I bought a couple of boxes of Padron '64, 23 and what have you. They have been sitting in my cabinet and aging, and I am hoping that in one or two more years they will be more to my liking... Larry.

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary

I tried one of the 64 "little ones" yesterday at my B&M. It was quite nice with a smooth finish. Box pressed with a nice draw and did not find it rough at all. Defiantely worth a shot to dip into again.

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary

Thanks for the review.

I enoy the '64's very much. I think I like them better than the 26's even.
As for the spicyness....I've never experienced an Anni that was "real spicy" just very smooth.
med - full bodied I'd say.

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary

Thanks for the review. I've only had one PAM64 and I loved it. Liked it more than the PAM 26 actually. I declared it my second favorite cigar on the spot

Once I have a few more, I have no doubts it will be my favorite!

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary

My view is that the 64 need some age on them. Not a bad smoke right out of the box, but aged for a while at 65% RH smooths them out in my opinion and pretty much takes care of any burn problem.

Where the Portland group herf most regularly of late, we can get 64s at 1/2 off during happy hour on Wednesdays and Fridays. I don't smoke them there, but take them home to age. At $6, they are worthwhile to me.

I love the 64s and totally agree with the age statement. Although the tobacco is well aged there is something to be said of the marrying of the tobacco oils that happens after the cigar is rolled and has rested for a year or so. Buy a box and put it away for a while, your patience will be greatly rewarded.

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary

1964 Principe is my favorite cigar ever. Granted, I haven't had a chance to smoke anything extremely pricey in comparison, but I've never experienced a burn problem and I find it to be one of the best smokes out there, even for the rather hefty (for a college student) pricetag.

Good review, thanks!
