Thumbs down Onyx Reserve Review

I smoked one tonight, and wasn't pleased.. It tasted somewhat bitter, and began to knock the hell out of me. Did anyone else experience this? CA gave it a 94, but I'm somewhat skeptical of that..

I'd like to hear youc comments on this cigar.

Thanks,
GF

Re: Onyx Reserve

Funny, I just saw yesterday how it recieved a 94. I have had pretty good success with this smoke and it seems to be pretty consistant from smoke to smoke but your not alone because there are many others who just dont find this cigar to be enjoyable. I , however, absolutely love it.

Re: Onyx Reserve

The Onyx Reserve is one of my favorites. I like them so much, I picked up a box for my wedding reception. From what I've read though, this is a love it or hate it cigar.

Re: Onyx Reserve

I have had good ones and bad ones, its definitely no 94 though. CA's ratings are pretty meaningless. When's the last time they gave a cigar a bad review?

Thoughts on the origin of the "94" rating.

Very long expensive dinner, dark restaurant with large quantities of alcohol provided by importer to "set the stage". Band removal and reapplication on a Padron 1964 # 6 maduro.... a 94 rating is born.

Re: Onyx Reserve

I met Mr. Patel (not sure which one) at the Corona Cigar Co. in Orlando today. I tried the first ever Maddie I liked which was the RP 12 year aged. I really liked it cocoa and coffee preaty smooth. It still got that maddie bite at the end but an overall good smoking experience. Anyway' to make a short story long I asked him why did I like your maduro and non yet I've tried and he said "most maduro's are backed and colored to add to the darkness of he wrapper." I always felt (espcially with the Onyx) that Maddies have a "burnt" flavor to them. I recommend this cigar.

BTW I just finished one of his Sun growns which I liked even better.

Re: Onyx Reserve

yuck. just yuck
I still have this cigar etched in my memory.
I remember at one point during smoking i took much to large a draw.
I nearly and it wasnt because of high nicotine levels or that i was buzzing but it was just the flavor of the cigar.

man the booger almost gagged me.
sheesh.

Re: Onyx Reserve

I've seen the Onyx Reserve @ my local smoke shop and I've contemplated trying it. However, I haven't gotten around to it due to my lack of funds. Once I start pulling in some real cash I'll buy one and let you guys know how it goes.

Re: Onyx Reserve

IMHO I like what I like and I really liked it. In my oinion it gets above a 90 at least. but that doesn't mean every one should like it.

Re: Onyx Reserve

I can't say that I'd give a 94 rating, but it is a good smoke. Apparently, as someone said earlier, it is definitely "love/hate" thing. I think it's a pretty good smoke.

The regular Onyx line...back when the band looked like a cut stone of onyx, was one of the first cigars I would smoke on a regular basis. I loved that one. I'd love to be hooked up with another one of those.

Re: Onyx Reserve

The Onyx Reserve has always been one I liked. So much so that I always keep a box. A 94?, no way. But still a good smoke for my tastes.

Re: Onyx Reserve

It could always be a 'Luck of the draw' kind of thing. Despite my usual intensely tedious over-evaluation (consistancy throughout the box, wrapper presentation, firmness, Bloom/Mold?, etc.) of each and every one of the cigars I intend to purchase I have still ended up picking a bad cigar that I have previously had nothing but great experience with. The Carlos Torano Signiture series is an example of this. I think that it may possibly have been due to the Tobacconist whom I purchased it from though, as the quality of their cigars can be greatly varied.. If there is any doubt in your mind that this cigar may have possibly been the bad seed of the bunch, I recommend that you give it a try even if after a year, its worthy trying again.

I've had similiar experiences. About 6 months into my hobby, with a still undeveloped palate, a slow growing knowledge of cigars (and I still have plenty of room to grow), and what seemed to be like (for a 20yearold) an unlimited amount of money flowing from my pockets I had been purchasing several new cigars each week to sample. I had long anticipated tyring the Fuente Fuente Opus X because of all the great reviews I had read.. I prepared to smoke this $15 cigar all day and when I finally lit it up it was the most horrid thing I had ever had the displeasure of smoking. It reminded me of that "Cuban" that my friend got me to smoke in high school well needless to say it obviously wasnt a cuban just a poorly constructed bandless churchhill that was incredibly full bodied and too much for even the most daring of freshman to sample.

Evidently! I've had at least five and enjoyed each one.

I kinda like them. My only gripe with them is that they tend to go out alot.
