Montecristo H-2000 Magnum and Rothchilde Review
I don’t know, but I may be close to having a new favorite cigar. I just need to smoke another box or two to be sure. As it its, it has always been a toss-up for me as to which of the following I prefer: the Punch line or the Montecristo Afrique. Well doggonit if someone didn’t go and combine the two into what may end up being the perfect cigar for me.
The Montecristo H-2000 Magnum and Rothschilde cigars are absolutely beautifully constructed cigars wrapped in the H-2000 wrapper. They tend to have the creamy flavor of a Montecristo Afrique with the “punch” of a Honduran Punch cigar. This should not be surprising since these cigars are made in the Dommincan Republic using a Domminican binder and a mix of Domminican and Honduran filler. The wrapper is the H-2000, which it seems people either love or hate. Count me in the former!
These two glass tubed masterpieces run a 5 X 50 for the Rothschilde and 6 X 50 for the Magnum. They are not inexpensive, running at around $6.00 a piece. But to me, they are worth every cent! Pre-light draw on both examples is excellent. Flavor is right there from the get-go. As I stated before, flavor is a mix of Punch and Afrique, and since I like both, this combination particularly appeals to me. Smoke is volumous, dense and creamy. Flavor builds as the band is neared. In the case of the Magnum, I detected no real tar build up and nubbed the couple of these that I have tried. I rate the Magnum a solid “A” on my rating scale. The Rothschilde tended to burn a bit harsher toward the end than the Magnum, and I let the one example I have tried so far go at the band. Still a B+ in my book. The raters at Top 25 Cigars are not as impressed with these cigars as the ratings are 6.87 for the Magnum and 7.67 for the Rothschilde. Perleman gives the Montecristo H-2000 series a good solid 9, which I believe is deserved.
