Padron 1964 Anniversary Diplomatico Review

I love Padrons. If there's a cigar I go to by default it's Padron; a 2000 if I get a chance or a Delicias. So I had high expectations when I picked up a 64 Anni; it lived up and surpassed them.

Initial looks are impressive. Excellently constructed and great looking wrapper. The double band looked great on it too. The cigar had a pleasant cocoa/coffee scent that made me like it before I even lit it up.

Double guillotine cut took the cap off smoothly. The prelight draw was perfect, and tasted like it smelled: cocoa and coffee. Toasted it and lit it with a butane torch.

It started out with a mild bodied woodsy flavor for the first few puffs. Very smooth liquidy smoke, and lots of it. After the first few puffs it gained more body (medium) and the cocoa/coffee flavor started kicking in as well. Those were the dominant flavors from then on. It wasn't very complex, the flavor didn't change a lot, but I'm not complaining at all. It was a very nice consistent flavor that I've come to expect from Padron that lasted right to the sweet end.

Burned perfectly and never once needed a touchup, even when I set it down for a couple minutes to get a drink. The ash didn't fall off until I set the cigar down and was up to an inch and a half by then.

Defenitely a good cigar, and one I'd save for a special occasion. The only thing I wish is that it didn't cost as much, but hey, it was worth it. I've got one sitting in my humidor now that I've been stowing away for the past few months for my birthday, and I'm expecting it to be just as good as this one was. My favorite smoke as of yet with a 9/10

Nice review. I agree with you on the cost. If they cost about a third less, I may have a few more in the humi.

Was this a Natural or Maduro? I'm waiting on an order to get the maduro, but tried that natural, and really like them. They are a bit pricey, but for a 9/10 they beat some other top shelf cigars IMHO

Was a natural. My B&M didn't have any in maduro, sadly, and I really want to try one of these in maduro since I love the way maddies taste. If I find one I'll be sure to post my review here. And yeah, the Anni line seems to always be pricey, which is why I get a couple, let them sit for a few months, and pull them out for something special. This time was my friend's last night in town before he goes to Iraq with his USMC unit, so it was warrented.

1964's are not bad. Construction and burn is always top notch. However, the taste is a little 1 dimensional for me with the finish being a little too dry. 8.5/10 for me. Maybe I need to try a few more.

I'm a big fan of the Principe both nat and maduro only problem is its size just teases the hell of you. An amazing little smoke but leaves you wanting more, so look out.

That's a good review, spot on. Don't have too many of them and they don't spend a lot of time with me before they move on.

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary Diplomatico

My initial favorite cigar, I've enjoyed these on and off for a couple of years. I made the mistake of smoking one the day after an Opus X and felt it lacked flavor and intensity. I'll have to try one again, but not after a monster cigar. One thing I love about these cigars is the construction. They burn even with a great draw everytime.

Great review.
