5X50 5 Vegas Classic Robusto Review

I usually don't like to review a cigar after smoking only 3, so I may upgrade this puppy at a later date. I've been smoking the Coronas and Double Coronas in the 5 Vegas Classic for 2 or 3 months, and they're both have made their way into my regular rotation. Between the two, I've found very little difference in taste or construction.

And, I found no problems with the construction or burn with the Robusto either. I smoked one of 'em outside in a 25 mph wind and the burn hardly varied. The flavor in the first inch or so led me to believe these Robustos were going to be from a flavor standpoint, very similar to the Coronas. But as I got further in to the smoke, it developed a bitter taste, nothing really bad, but something than was not there at all with the Coronas. I'm going to give the rest of them a couple of months in the humi and give them a second try at a later date. These Classics are some of the most well constructed cigars I've found in this price range and I plan to keep smoking the Coronas on a regular basis at the prices I've been able to buy them and hopefully the Robusto, which is my preferred shape, will lose the bitter flavor after a little age.

Smoking times were a little over 30 minutes. Price paid on the DS was 7.00/5pack+shipping which is the price I've been paying for almost all of the Coronas and Double Coronas.

Nice review and observations. I also always keep some of these around as they virtually can always hit the spot.

From my experience the Church, Torp and Robusto all CAN have this bitter or sometimes sour taste. Not all of them do, but it seems to be hit and miss, even after 1 year in a 67% humi. On the other hand I have never had this same issue with the smaller RG's. Coronas and Double Coronas and Panatelas are all I order now.

Thanks for bringing this up

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Like you say, these are good sticks to have around and at least I now know my senses of taste and smell haven't got up and left me.

Thanks. As EvanS said in an earliar post, for some reason with the robusto it's a hit and miss type of thing. Hopefully you'll get a box of the good ones. But they should make good yard gars, I've personally tested them in winds gusting to over 30 MPH and the burn stayed true.

After reading your comments I realized I had 2 open winning bids for more Robustos. With less than 3 hrs. remaining, I was outbid. One of the rare instances when I was genuinely pleased to find that someone had kindly snatched them from my grasp.

I had the same problems with the taste of a box of torps I bought. I smoked 2 of them and have decided to let them sit for a while and hopefully they come around.

Update,

While doing a little tiddying up in the humi where the balance of these Robustos had been aging since my purchase of the smokes in January, I decided to light one up and was greeted with a very pleasant surprise. This may be a one time phenomenon, but the strong bitterness in the in the second half of the cigar had completely disappeared. A little on the mild side, but smooth as a baby's butt. I didn't expect much after only 4 months, but hopefully this will prove to be the case for others who had also experienced the bitterness. Aged at approx. 72% RH, 69 degress F. Good luck.

Ya know, laid down 9 Classic torpedos at Christmas after smoking one of them. After only a couple of months the flavor was incredibly better. After 4 months now they are great.

Good to hear. I'm far from an expert on matters such as this, but most cigars seem to need at least a short period of aging before they reach a stage when their flavors can best be realized.

It could have been the sticks we had were just "fresh" from the factory and needed only 3 or 4 months of additional aging to reach that stage. Mystery to me.
