El Rey de Mundo Olvidados (Robusto) Review

This is my review of the El Rey de Mundo Olvidados, Robusto size.

Appearance/Construction: This has got to be one of the best looking boxes I have ever seen. The attention to detail and the waves/curves makes the cigar look important. The cigar itself is dark looking with a smooth wrapper and sweet woody notes about it.

Prelight Draw: Sweet and floral

First Impressions: The draw was good and the size was as well. I have not had an El Rey de Mundo NC before.

Smoking: This had to be one of the weirdest cigars I have had yet. The burn was excellent, the draw was as well. The ash was greyish black and solid. But the weird part was the aftertaste. As I inhaled the cigar tasted great and as I exhaled, it tasted VERY good. But after each exhale the aftertaste reminded me of a long forgotten cigarette ashtray. Like some burnt funk that coated my tongue. To make matters worse, I really really liked the flavors when I swirled it around and as I was exhaling, but the aftertaste each time made me cringe.

Final Comments: While this cigar had great construction, a beautiful display box, and almost perfect burn, the aftertaste was so bad, that I don't know if I can suffer through another one.

That is very odd! I must say I've never had the Olvidados, but the ERDM Robusto Oscuro is probably my favorite smoke! Not sure what to say, hopefully the next one is better?

These are different animals for sure. I've been a fan of NC erdm for years and these are completely different. I had one at RTDA and couldn't wait for them to hit the shelves. The stick I smoked at RTDA was great, tons of complex flavor with a perfect burn and draw, I really hated to let it go out. I geeked out and jumped all over two boxes of these as soon as I found some, and I have been really underwhelmed. The boxes I bought really don't taste the same as the stick I smoked in Houston, maybe they need some cedar time.

Smoking the Chateau as I type. Half way through it. I am a newb...

Really different taste. Very nice draw. Wonderful flavor. It made my mouth feel clean, refreshed. There were lots of flavors but it seems very light. The description says full body, but this stick seems very mild. BTW, I have never smoke an ERDM.

Hmm...I've had my eye on these. It's funny you bring up the aftertaste issue. I just experienced that today with a Saint Luis Rey. It was a great tasting cigar in the intake and the exhale, but it had that wet ashtray afterfunk on the back of the tongue. It was gnarly. I usually love these.

By any chance did you enjoy this cigar with coffee? I've noticed coffee adversely affects some smokes on the aftertaste, and the problem today began when I started drinking coffee with it.

Re: El Rey de Mundo Olvidados (Robusto)

I was drinking steeped Chai, I have noticed what I drink sometimes effects the flavor of the cigar. I did experience the ashtray taste. That is because I dropped the cigar in the ashtray. I can be such a loser sometimes

The cigar was definitely different for me. I liked it, then I didn't, then I did, again. It's one I think you must try for yourself.

Have fun...

Smoked my first one the other day and I found it to be excellent. The draw and burn were perfect. I did not detect the aftertaste you mentioned. I have a 5er on the way from cbid, so I can get a better judgment of them.
