Rocky Patel 1990 torro Review

This is my first review here and I will tell you up front, I have NEVER tasted cocoa, leather, current, or a mocha-vanilla soy latte in any cigar, I have ever smoked.

But what I tasted in this cigar was some awesome aged tobacco that made me want another one right away, but since it was "bed" time (if you know what I mean), I put the 2nd one off till tonight.

Like most of you, I have read all the hype and the reviews on the Rocky 1990 and 1992 lines, so it was hard not to expect something spectacular, though I always try hard to be objective any time I try a new stick. This one lived up to everything I had expected and more.

First of all, I bought two last weekend(for $6.25 each) at Cigar Harbor in Destin, Florida. A nice little shop with knowledgeable and friendly staff and not TERRIBLY pricey, considering it is in the heart of a Tourist Mecca. from advise gained on this board and on another, I was encouraged that they were ready to smoke, and so decided to bust one out last night.

The cigar itself is beautiful and extremely well constructed. Dark and slightly oily, EXACTLY the way I like them. I like the bands, too. They are subdued, but attractive. I don't know about you, but I almost always take the band(s) off of a cigar before I smoke it. I really like the look of naked cigar. Plus, since I generally smoke a good smoke down to the very end, it is easier to get the band off earlier rather than later. But I digress. It is a lovely cigar and its looks BEG you to smoke it.

And smoke it I did! Pre light aroma and draw hinted of a stronger cigar than I was expecting, So I was even more excited when I fired her up.

First few puffs, and I was in love. Milder than I was now hoping for, it was so incredibly smooth, yet also complex in that it is like no cigar I had ever smoked, but somehow reminds me of the great ones that I have smoked. If I had to compare it, I would say in the beginning, it reminded me a little of a Maria Mancini magic mountain. But later, it was all on its own. It had a rich NIC essence to me. Had I not known, I would never have guessed it had a Nick/Dom blend and that is fine because I am a huge NIC fan these days. Great aged tobacco flavor. Exactly what a cigar is supposed to taste like and the reason I love smoking them. As I got further down it got a little stronger and again, for my tastes, even better.

It had a perfect burn all the way, (and I really mean perfect) and produced gobs of rich white smoke, with a light gray/off-white ash.

I indeed smoked it down to the nub. It went very well with the cool breeze on my back porch, the Gentleman Jack on the rocks, the Mavericks in the background, and my beautiful wife by my side waiting patiently.

Fantastic smoke. Rocky nailed this series on the head, and if all of his cigars were this good, he would be the king of the world. I will smoke my 2nd one tonight, probably before dinner with a couple of ice cold beers and a more festive atmosphere.

Buy these and smoke them, they ARE ready. If you are a novice, this is what a great cigar is suppose to be like and also proves that the great ones don't HAVE to be expensive. If you are a veteran, you will be pleasantly rewarded for your measly six bucks or so.

And if you bought some and don't like them, send to me, and I will pay the postage!

Thanks for reading and I hope it provides some useful information.

Mike

Welcome back Cap'n Mike! Good to have you back. Great review. I like the sungrowns sometimes. I find them to be very inconsistent.

Welcome back from the dead Capin.

I "Always" have 92 and 90 toros in the humi. One (two) of those different cigars that if you like doms should be part of the rotation.

CI usually has bundles of them in the back room if you ever visit their retail store. $ 75 for 25.

Great review. I have the RP vintage 90 robustos. I really like them a lot. Not a complex smoke but taste great out of the box, especially at around $4 a piece, they are really good. If you want to know where I buy them PM me, I can give you a link. I don't think I can post the store here.
Try the Edge, they are nice too.

Nice review Cap'n. I really like the 92's. But yesterday I picked up 2 90's 2 sungrown and 2 edge. I did have another smoked picked out for tonight but I may have to pull out one of those 90's now.
