La Rosa Especial Review

This was a surprisingly good cigar. I'd place it up there with my Padrons that I usually smoke. Anyway, a little background info. I was gifted this cigar by a friend a while back, about six months ago. I finally found some free time to smoke it tonight and enjoyed every minute of the two hour smoke. I'm pretty sure it's the New Comer, measuring at 7x50.

Toasted the foot, cut it, and lit up. The draw on it was good, a little tight, by by no means hard. Enough that you know you're puffing on the cigar. The smoke was peppery with cedar and a little leather. Definitely a full body smoke that made my tongue tingle a little. The spice mellowed out a little and the cigar got sweeter further on. As the cigar got sweater I noticed more leather and earth that was well balanced by the cedar taste. From the second third on the peppery spiciness became less and less, but still something you'd taste after the other flavors. Cedar was the dominant flavor and was well mixed in with the leather. The sweetness showed more in the last third, along with leather and earth, and made for a very nice finish.

After the first third I was getting thirsty and made myself a cafe late. It matched well for me, bringing out more of the sweetness, leather, and earth to match the dominant cedar flavor. The cigar was by no means one dimensional, and the peppery aftertaste made it even more complex. All in all it was a very nice flavor profile.

The burn was excellent, and though it got uneven a few times, corrected itself with the next puff. The ash didn't get too long, an inch at the most usually, but that doesn't mean bad construction. It was a well made cigar, burned well, and tasted great.

Overall this was a great smoke. It burned well, was constructed well, and tasted excellent. What's more is that JR has these at very good prices, about $68 a box, though I've seen specials in their catalog where they're $10 less than that and they send a box of Atlases for free as well. 8.5/10

Thanks for the review ShaulWolf. I've seen these sticks around for years but have never pulled the trigger on a 5er from JR's. Guess I'll have to do it now...

Re: La Rosa Especial

Haven't tried the new blend but they are getting some great reviews.

I have half a box of the old blend/branding that was tissue wrapped and came in two wrappers. My maduros have about 6 years on them and are awesome. I'll hate to see them go.

But that will give me a reason to get some of the new ones

Thanks for the review

Man, I wish I had the patience to let my cigars age that long. I'm going to get a fiver of these and let them sit on the bottom drawer of the humidor my fiancée got me and let them age. I really liked this cigar, and I'll bet if I let it age and mellow out it'd be even better. Would love to see a review of one of your aged smokes.

Re: La Rosa Especial

I bought a box on closeout from JRs last week. A box of 20 (6 x 52) for $29.99 I wasn't expecting much, but it was actually very good. Medium-to-full. A little spiciness in the flavor. Great burn.

I think once these get a little age on them, they may turn into something very, very good.

Re: La Rosa Especial

I had another one tonight. They keep going up on my enjoyment scale. I just can't believe I found them... and now they are gone.

Re: La Rosa Especial

I enjoyed the original La Rosas and am down to about 6 of them somewhere in a cooler. It turns out that I liked the new blend in maduro more than the originals, especially the New Orleans #2. I have a little less than a box remaining and am rationing them to myself.
