Rocky Patel American Market Selection Review

I was so excited to get outside to smoke a cigar tonight that I thought I'd share my experience with the Rocky Patel American Market Selection torpedo, exclusive to Famous Smoke Shop. This particular stick was sent to my by St. Lou Stu. Thank you Tim!

This Rocky Patel American Market Selection Torpedo had been sitting at the bottom of my cooler just waiting for the perfect moment. I decided tonight was that night. I popped open the cooler to that wonderful smell. Bypassing bunches of other yummies, I knew what I was after. There it was, 1 of 2 RP AMS Torps sent by St. Lou Stu. I picked the one of the twins and looked her over. The wrapper was decent, not the smoothest, but nice looking. As for the smell, not much there.

I headed upstairs, grabbed the Xikar and lighter. Being Ash Wednesday, I shied away from the typical brew, and boiled some water soak a tea bag in. The pair was set. I clipped the tip of the shallow torpedo and took a draw. It seemed fine, nothing special. Outside we go.

I stepped onto the patio and took a deep breath of the cool windy winter air. It seemed like a pre-pre-spring night. Perfect (right?). I set down the drink to light the cigar. Away we go...

This stick had to be one of the easiest lights I've ever had. Like a clingy college freshman, it begged to be burned. The aroma was enticing, I couldn't wait. I didn't...

The first few puffs were amazing. Very distinct flavors that I can describe for you vividly. The draw tasted of mildly sweet tobacco (yum), the flavor left a peppery zest on my tongue, then left with an amazing taste of unsalted cashews. It was wonderful. This kept up for the first quarter or so with rare moments of citrus (maybe that was the tea).

The burn of the cigar wasn't real good at first, but definitely corrected itself through the course of the event. The draw was just as nice as before it was lit. It was perfect. It took just enough to get what I wanted and didn't make me work for it at all. This stick was probably on the less-humid side as it burned quicker and cracked a couple times, but I enjoy my cigars that way, so there.

The flavor takes a turn maybe around halfway through. The finish takes on more of a woodsy flavor, replacing the nice nuttiness. It was good. It held a more familiar flavor to other cigars I've had. It's like spending the night with an old girlfriend. You know what it's like but it's still good.

The flavor switched up again after that to less of a sweet smoke to more robust tobacco. The zest and pepper held up, and even stepped up a bit. The finish went to a combination of smokey, still woodsy, and a tad bit o nut returns. These flavors, coupled with the build of intensity left an intriguing mix of flavors.

I enjoyed it for a little more with my tea. After the tea had run low and the cigar burned short, it was time to call it quits. I wasn't sad to see it go, but rather remembered what a time we had, and was happy.

The one thing that I can recommend about this smoking experience is give it time. The smoke is much better when it isn't rushed. See prom night. You it's going to happen, so just relax and take it slow.

Overall I was very pleased with this cigar and again, would like to thank Tim for the opportunity to test drive this baby not once, but twice! The private label blend is very similar to RP Connecticut (which I love), but has a bit more spice and strength.

Strength: Med
Looks: B+
Burn: A-
Flavor: A
Price: B-
Draw: A+
Smoke/Burn: A-

I can give this cigar a solid A.

If you have the chance, try one. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how good these are. I was a little skeptical at first in not wanting something too mild, but the RP AMS shines with great flavor and decent muscle.

HEY!
You spent the night with my old girlfriend!!!

Glad you enjoyed it. I smoke a lot of 'better' stuff, but these sticks hold a special place with me. I like em like a fat girl like cake.

Funny, I saw this review and thought "cool, someone has bought some besides me.... let's see what they have to say." Wait, it was me! I forgot I sent those to ya. Aren't ya glad I sent two?

I need to pick up another box now, I'm low on em. Watch cigarauctioneer.com, it's about time for a yankee auction on 'em and they can be had for $50ish/box.

Great review, I couldn't agree more.

Great review!
I've got a whole box of double-coronas here for smoking slowly with friends when there is enough time. The only time I've smoked one I got pretty buzzed of the brandy we were drinking (search for buzzed review ). I look forward to the next chance to try one again, this time maybe with a more clear head. I haven't had any bad cigar from RP yet.
