Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo- Maybe I'm Just Not Ready to Appreciate It

Another short review from the new guy with the undeveloped palate...

I smoked a Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo natural this evening.

For starters, these cigars look great. They smell great, too. Just a nice mild, enticing tobacco scent. I cut the cap, toasted the foot, and puffed away. The draw was loose, and that was the first thing that surprised me.

I'm not going to break this one down into thirds, because I couldn't discern much change throughout the experience. The cigar had a mild tobacco flavor, and I tasted spice on the tip of my tongue with every puff. The spice seemed to increase bit by bit, but was never too peppery. I did not notice changing flavors, or subtle flavors, or a real increase in the intensity of the flavor.

Although I enjoyed the Padron '64, it's not a cigar I would go out of my way to purchase again. I have seven of the naturals left (4 Exclusivo and 3 Monarca), and I'm going to let them rest for a few months to see if either my palate develops or they improve over time.

Perhaps I set my expectations too high, because I expected to be blown away by this cigar. I wasn't. I was more impressed by the Hemingway Short Story, Chateau Fuente sungrown, and Perdomo Reserve maduro perfecto.

I'll come back to the Padron 1964 natural later, and I'll try one of the maduros sometime in the near future (like next week). I've read enough reviews here to know that I shouldn't pass judgment after one cigar, and that our tastes differ. Maybe the '64 natural just isn't for me.

And maybe I'll post another review when I smoke the next one.

Next up: either the Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo maduro or the Tatuaje Havana VI Verocru #2.

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo- Maybe I'm Just Not Ready to Appreciate It

I've never had a 64 nat. That may be the problem. I'm sure I wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much as the maduro. I just like the maduro's sweetness.
The Exclusivo is a pretty big vitola, I'm surprised it didn't deliver.
The very best cigar I have ever smoked is a PAM26 #6. It delivered an array of tastes that were all to my liking, it developed as the cigar went along, and never overwhelmed or underwhelmed.
I probably enjoyed it even more because I had no idea what to expect.
Try a maduro and see how that goes. I'll go do the same right now.
Good Luck!!!

You need to smoke the maduro ones. I recently tried a few naturals and would agree nothing real special. Maybe I have been spoiled by smoking many and I do many Maduro ones and to be honest I can't get enough of them.

I started out smoking only naturals, but, I , too, prefer the maduros. The only naturals I like now are the Fuente SG and several CCs!

Or maybe you just don't like it. That's alright too. There are some cigars on CS that get such laud that everyone thinks they should like them - everyone's tastes are different and you can like what you like.

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo- Maybe I'm Just Not Ready to Appreciate It

I have recently been smoking a lot of the 64 naturals due to a couple trades and it is fast becoming one of my favorite smokes.

I have had many of the maduros, but find the natural not far behind, if behind at all.

The size I am familiar with is the Monarca.

I had the natural tonight. My first one and I too was expecting to be blown away. I was a bit underwelmed. I think perhaps my young palate isn't ready for this smoke? Not sure. I have one more in my humi and I think I'll wait a while before smoking.

I have to agree here. I have had 3 different sizes of this line, 2 maduro and 1 natural, and found them all underwhelming. A friend of mine tells me that I need to try the torpedo maduro before making final judgment, so I think that I will give it one more shot before passing judgment. It may just be my underdeveloped pallet, but right now I don't understand the hype.

Don't worry about it. If you don't like it there are plenty of other smokes out there. Doesn't mean there is something defective with your palate.

I have had cigars that others rave about (God of Fire is the first that comes to mind) and after I smoked it I couldn't understand why all the raves. Everyone's palate and taste preferences are different.

I have to agree with everyone here. Not every cigar is meant for everybody. We all have different tastes, same with food.

I do think the maduros are a more fulfilling cigar than the naturals. They aren't suppose to be pepper bombs, but I do like them, however I do feel that they are overpriced for my budget.

Smoke what you like.

I am sorry you didn't like it, the Exclusivo Maduro is one of my favorite cigars, and the natural is not far behind. Everybody has different tastes, and that just leaves more PAN's for the rest of us.

Aside from certain ISOM lines, the 1964 is my favorite cigar. The Exclusivo is a great size, too, but it may not have wowed you because you smoked the natural. The maduros have toooooooons more flavor, and I really think that you should give them a try.

On a side note, the construction of these cigars is nothing short of perfection. I'm always amazed at the wrapper, I don't know what they do to it, or how, but man is it good!

I would give the maduro a try. I never had the natural but the maduro 1964 torpedo is my absolute favorite cigar so far. Its just so smooth and creamy....mmmm.....<<as i wipe the drool off my mouth/>>

The PAM64 is one of my favorites. But it is probably not something to try unless you have been smoking for a little while, I think that goes for Maduro's in general.
