Cuesta-Rey Centro Fino Sungrown Pyramid #9 Review

Origin: Dominican Republic
Size: 6''1/4
RG: 52
Shape: Torpedo
Wrapper: Ecuador Natural Sungrown
Price: $4 ($7.95 buy one get one free @ local B&M)

Prelight -

Nice construction, good smell. Just a hint of spice on the prelight draw with a tiny bit of sweetness. Cool looking band. Meduim smooth wrapper feel.

1st third -

Harsh at the beginning, but mellowed out rather quickly. Nice spice, not much sweetness in the aftertaste, more sweet and pepper up front. Almost a sweet red pepper spice. Good amount of smoke, draw is a tad loose. Very even burn, holding salt and pepper ash.

2nd third -

More of the same, spice still holding strong and just a bit of sweetness. The band is getting a bit annoying due to the shape so I am thinking about pulling it off. Still a good mouthful of smoke. No re-cut need yet, as I usually have to with torps. The ash dropped about halfway through the second third.

3rd third -

Continuing with the same flavors as the first 2/3rds. I am getting a bit less sweetness and a little bit of a sour/stale aftertaste. A quick purge helped a little but it seems like it is losing steam toward the end here. The construction is still very good with a nice draw and even burn.

Overall impressions -

This is a pretty nice smoke. While I wasn't expecting any drastic changes toward the end I am a little disappointed that it all kind of fell apart taste wise into just spice and sour that made me reach for my drink much more than usual.

At $7.95 I would give this one a 5 out of 10,

At $4 I would give it a 7.5 out of 10.

Re: Cuesta-Rey Centro Fino Sungrown Pyramid #9

wow I am glad that you had a good one. I bought one today after reading the reviews and wanted to see for myself. I paid 7.99 for mine and cut it. I lite it and I was in heaven. However I seen a little split and I didn't think that much about it until half way around the wrapper started to come off. Tried the lick and stick and that did not work. Next thing I know it was bustin at the seams. Well I took it back to the B&M and asked him what he would do and told me that I was S.O.L. I showed him that it was only 1/4" of ash from a new one and he said that he was sorry that I did not like it and that I did not need to try and get a different cigar and that is why he does not offer a refund or trade to anyone. I said that I would be taking my business else where and seeing that I just bought 50+ 10 min before he changed his mind. I traded it for another one that was in a metal tube a little smaller and was a buck less. Loved it and will be doing a Review tonight or Tomorrow. Even that one had a little wrapper issue. No big deal.

James.
