Ashton Magnum Review
I got home early yesterday and decided to sit on the front porch and watch it rain. So I went into the humidor and this one smoke, an Ashton Magnum attracted my attention, white label, golden wrapper in a rubusto size. 5" x 50
Appearance, it had a nice rich golden wrapper. Compared to a 5 Vegas Gold or a Perdomo Reserve Champagne, it was lighter and had a rich sheen to it. A very well constructed cigar. I cut the end and the draw was very nice, open but not overly so. The cigar had a nice mild tobacco smell. When I toasted the end, the aroma was nice and nutty. It lighted easily and fully, and then stayed lit for the entire smoke. My first impression was that it was very mild with just a little pepper that faded quickly. As I smoked the first inch, it developed a little vanilla like taste with a very creamy smoke. The mild flavor and the light peppery smoke seemed to be well balanced. As I smoked the next inch, the flavor increased a little and started tasting a little more caramel like with just a hint of pepper. For the second half, the flavor moved a little towards medium, but still a nice creamy smoke with hints of nuts and caramel while still having that mild peppery taste. The draw got a little tighter at this point, but I don't mind working a little bit as long as I'm still enjoying the cigar. I smoked it down to about 1/2 inch and then put it down. This is a cigar with a mild, but interesting taste and aroma. As I exhaled each puff, I took the time to savor the taste and aroma which added to my enjoyment of this cigar. This cigar smokes very slowly; it really surprised me how long it took to smoke it. A nice mild smoke that moves a little towards medium at the end. It would go well with a cup of coffee and the Sunday comics. It probably should be your first cigar of the day. |

Re: Ashton Magnum
Nice review.
I think the 8-9-8 is the best in this size. I've also smoked the Double Magnum (toro) but find it a little harsher for my tastes. But you really captured the caramel hints in these -- they remind me of buttery, caramel popcorn.

Re: Ashton Magnum
Ditto on both of these comments - had my 1st Magnum a few weeks ago while on business in Alexandria, VA. Stopped in to a nice bar that welcomes cigars and enjoyed it to the max. I kept thinking it would go south the more I smoked it but it never did, stayed smooth and "buttery creamy" (very accurate description that does fit) the whole way, smoked it down to the very end until it got way too hot. I put it up there with the Montecristo White any day for the money - just out of my price range for every day smoking that's for sure but do want to try the maduro one day to see if it is the same, smooth, enjoyable ride that it's brother was.
