Padron 1964 Principe Mad. Review

Padron 1964 Principe Mad.

0.0 - 2.0 = poor/inferior quality
2.1 - 2.9 = fair
3.0 - 3.5 = good
3.5 - 4.5 = excellent
4.6 - 5.0 = superior

1) Aesthetics: I am sorry, but just a box-press just makes for a good-looking cigar. The wrapper is lighter chocolate, in fact, very light for a maduro wrapper. When considering the number of veins and the dry look, not very oily, this looks like a cheaper cigar. Is that toothiness or calcium deposits. The band however tells another tale, that is a class act - a band underneath with a serial number and the overlaying band. (see photo)
Score for aesthetics: 3.5

2) Pre-light Construction: A solid cigar - from head to foot. Heavy enough that it feels like there is a goodly amount of tobacco in it. This smells seductive, a bit like a barnyard.
Score for Pre-light construction: 4.7

3) Post-light Construction/How it smoked: This drew well and never developed any sponginess, remaining firm the entire smoke. Cool that the little bumps on the wrapper showed up in the ash (see photo) The solid white ash held for a good 1 ½ inches - didn’t notice it drop as I was outside playing horseshoes. The wind never even caused a hint of a run.
Score for post-light construction: 4.8

4) Flavor and strength: Pepper predominated the first third, with underlying hints of burnt chocolate and coffee. 2nd third built in complexity, as the pepper faded and the coffee and some pecan-ish flavors came forward. The last third built in spiciness, but it wasn’t peppery - couldn’t describe the flavor - and there was a hint of Cracker Jacks and coffee also present. Good solid medium bodied performance.
Score for flavor and strength: 4.4

5) Aftertaste/Finish: Lingering for a little bit was a nice "tobacco" and spice flavor, this changed as the smoke went on to chocolate spice - staying on the palate for a nice finish.
Score for aftertaste: 4.2

6) Aroma: Read the flavors, they were pretty much what the aroma was - coffee, Cracker Jacks, coffee and pumpkin spice - boldly a cigar
Score for aroma: 4.4

7) General Comments: I am amazed by PAM 64s every time I have one. My favorites is still the Exclusivo, but I enjoy a number of the other sizes as well. This bad boy lasted about an hour and 15 minutes, even outside in the wind accompanied by two Sam Adams Cream Stouts - which compliments this stick fantastically. Don’t be put off by the small size, this cigar delivers - in spades!!!

Yeah, it is a bit breezy, but a couple beers with a good friend (trying to get him to be a cigar smoker - gave him AF Hemi Short Story) out throwing shoes. A nice steak dinner with the families afterward... what a great day!!
Me with a nice stout and a great stick...

Great review! I picked up my first PAM this weekend and will save it for a special occasion (if my patience holds out!) Great to see a beer pairing, I always struggle with making that match.

Great review Todd! One of my favorite cigars and my favorite beer! Darn, wish you were located closer to me. I'd start attending services on Sunday again.
