Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Review

Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Robusto

Length: 5.5"
Gauge: 50
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatran

I picked up a fiver of these a while ago for a good price ($13). I've finally gotten around to lighting a couple up Tuesday and another yesterday. Now the photos are from Tuesday, and the conditions weren't exactly ideal in the barracks. There was a good breeze that made keeping the burn even difficult, but it was manageable. Anyway, onward.

I have to say that this is a gorgeous looking cigar. It's got a nice dark wrapper with some veins on it that give it character. It has a smooth feel to it and the wrapper is pretty durable. That got tested in helping a classmate move his stuff up three flights of stairs with the cigar between my teeth. Didn't even leave a scratch.

The construction is good and the draw is excellent. Once lit there was a good volume of smoke. The flavor was rich tobacco and a bit of nuttiness in it. People describe cream in the flavor profile, but I didn't really get much of that in the first third. It was mainly the rich tobacco with nuts.

After the first third is when the creaminess showed, but mainly in the finish and was only hinted at. The dominant flavor was the medium-full bodied tobacco with nuts.

During the final third of the cigar the cream showed a little more in the finish and the cigar developed some sweetness to it. Overall I didn't get much flavor changes, only a little creaminess and sweetness going further into the cigar. It wasn't bad at all, but not really my thing either.

There was one thing that bothered me about this cigar: unless I lit the cigar perfectly I'd have an uneven burn. Most other cigars correct themselves, but this one gave me issues until I corrected it. After the correction it burned evenly and spot on. Now it wasn't the wind that did this, since the second one I had was on a calm and sunny day and they were in different humidors. But that's a minor thing, and your results may vary.

I'll try out another one later on and see how it goes again. I liked it, but it's not something I'd jump through hoops to get. 8/10

Excellent review! Great cigar too. And So close to Tommy Condons.... Now I'm craving a Vintage 92 and a Guiness.

I've had more burn problems with this cigar, especially in the Petite Corona size, than with the 1990 version (I'm assuming due to the difference in wrapper), but I do enjoy the flavor and the construction (draw, wrapper, etc) is always top notch. Try the Churchill - there is a little more flavor variation, in my opinion.

These are awesome smokes. The churchill is one of my favorites.
