Newbie first read of a Hemmingway Short Story

First review, go easy! I've got a completely undeveloped and illiterate palate, so help me out if you can!

Construction: Feels nice, and its oh so cute! I still feel effeminate.
Appearance : I like the shape. Skinny to fat, with a nipple on the end. Small in stature, can a stogie this petite actually satisfy a 6'5" 250lb (all muscle of course :P) man such as myself? Read on!

Drink of choice: Nothing, I was on the dike that keeps my city from sinking. God forbid an earthquake happens!

Pre light draw and aroma : Tastes like a cigar. Draws tight because I didn't clip the foot, but that'll fix itself!

First third : Didn't enjoy the first few puffs. I lit it with a triple torch (c.o. Rob at taboo!!) by way of toasting the foot, no lighting puffs. I then purged it, let it sit for a minute, and drew the first taste. Like I said the first few puffs weren't the greatest, but hey, I hear thats common. That went away, and heres what my noob palate tasted :

Something kind of like caramel sauce (what sits on the bottom of the iced venti caramel macciatos I love so dearly.)
Cigar taste (maybe thats nicotine?)
Back of my tongue felt "peppery" I tried, but I couldn't taste it on the front, like real pepper can be.

At this point a friend came along! It looked like someone had spilt a drink, so this little critter kept me company

Second third :

Mint? Not the flavor, but the way it makes your mouth feel. Kind of like puffing on a menthol cig, but thats obviously not the case here.

Some sort of wood. Didn't last long, but it was there.

Sweetness. Not caramel-y like before, but just...sweet.

At this point I was happy with life. Here's a pic of me so you have a face to my username!

Last third :

Pretty much the same as the second, but the flavors seemed to back off. I don't know if that should happen, or whether my palate was just overcome, but hey, I'm just a noob right?

Burial:

A garbage can is no place for a smoke. I decided to send mine off into the water in a blaze of glory, viking style! Here it is resting on the precipice of its death before toppling into the abyss of the bilge outflow that keeps my house from being 3 feet underwater!

So, if I were to give this a sort of numbered rating system, it would be

Appearance: 8/10
Taste : 6/10
Construction : 9/10
Burn : 8/10 (corrected once)
Value : 5/10 (I wouldn't buy more, I've had smokes I've liked better)

So thats a 36/50, or 72%. I however am taking the liberty of scoring this one with a special catagory; Manliness.

Manliness : -5

Mathil adjusted score : 31/50, or 62%. A C.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, give me input and feedback! Correct my misnomers of the things I tasted, and tell me what you think/taste of these smokes!

Great review...I could not agree with you more on both the "overall" and the "manliness" factor...

As far as the review, great job. As far as your take on the Short Story, to each their own. This is personally one of my favorites, just bought a box Saturday. As far as input, next time you have one of these don't use a triple torch. All you need to do on these is light the nipple and it will burn great. You probably burnt the entire end with the triple, could have affected the taste. Next time just use a match, thes are easy lighting sticks.

Thanks for the review. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it more.
I agree with the previous poster, most people don't light a perfecto properly. You should use a match and be careful not to burn the entire end.
I personally think these are great little smokes, but that is the beauty of this site. Lots of different viewpoints.

I liked you review and your attempt at picking out flavors.... I am still too new to even come up with stuff... so good job!

As for the cigar, I love this one as well. One of my favorite cigars right now, but it's like everyone says... everyones likes different cigars, so smoke what you like.

Cheers brother, thanks for the review

Re: Newbie first read of a Hemmingway Short Story

Great review. The Short Story is one of my favorite cigars. Now I always have a few in the humi. Also picked up some Hemingway Signature from Rob at Taboo so I can explore the blend a bit more (sometimes a Short Story is just too short even though they last me about an hour).

Re: Newbie first read of a Hemmingway Short Story

thank you for the feedback! Allthough it may not be my favorite smoke at the moment, ill give another one a go sometime down the road. Ive found I like maduro wrappers moreso than others, so that may have come into play. In the end everyone has their preferences, and now I know some of you love these. Maybe some will be launched your way sometime

It's a rite of passage I think. The next one will be even better.

Fuente releases the Hemingways in Maduro. They are tough to find, but keep watching for them.

Nice Review! I, too, love the short stories! If you like maduro, try the Sancho Panza Double Maduro-very good, especially for the price!

There were a couple offerings in the WTS thread recently. Also, I think they only release them once a year. If you can find them get them. They are superb.
