Cheap Cigar Review 05 RB Fundadores Longfellow
R.B. Fundadores Longfellow
6.8” x 48 ring Ecuadorian Sumatra Wrapper over a blend of Nicaraguan, Honduran and Dominican tobaccos $5.00 for 5 at CBid The cigar is pretty well made with no visible flaws. It smells good, clips cleanly and pre-lit draw is OK. The first draws were absolutely wonderful. Tasted like smooth creamy buttery goodness. I honestly thought I had found the Holy Grail with this one. I said, “Wow!” a couple times out loud and kept looking at it after each puff with what I am sure was a look of utter disbelief. Now for the bad news. I am sure you have seen those movies where the bad guy suffers from some sort of multiple personality disorder? It could be the great husband or boyfriend in any Lifetime Original Movie, the Nanny in Hand That Rocks the Cradle or a new roommate like in Single White Female. Everything starts out all hunky dorey but before it’s all over you’re in a bloody life or death struggle usually involving a large kitchen knife. The R.B. Fundadores Longfellow is that cigar. Like I was saying before, it started out perfect. The sun was out. Birds were chirping. I could hear the faint reminder of Spring in the sound of a lawn mower a few blocks away. Pure suburban bliss. The great tasting stogie on the back porch was only adding to the soothing weekend experience. Every fourth or fifth puff would taste a little off but not too bad. After the first third, those off tasting puffs would get a little stronger and nastier. I started to get a little suspicious of the cigar. Something was not quite right with it. To this point, I was rather enjoying it and couldn’t really fathom the horror that was to follow. After all, every time a bad draw would rear it’s ugly head it would settle down back into something better. I was also starting to notice that the good tasting parts were starting to taste different. They weren’t the smooth buttery flavor but pleasant none the less. Deeper into the second third, a cloud passed before the sun and threw a foreboding shadow upon the landscape. The Beast was revealed for the first time. Dirty Peanuts. That is the only way I can describe it. I was truly concerned now but I had to see this through. Maybe this was temporary? Like any other victim before me, I once again ignored the pain and wished that the cigar would get back to what it was when we first met. A couple more good draws held my interest but my stupidity was soon rewarded with more dirty peanuts. This time with a hint of fish. A stiff cold breeze picked up accompanied by the sound of a police siren and a crack of thunder in the distance. I took a couple more draws. I tried washing the awful flavor down with Coke but it didn’t work. It kept coming back assaulting my senses with every foul flavor known to man. I had to end it before I was ruined from cigars altogether. I lunged up out of my chair and stumbled to the rail. I held the Longfellow out at full arm’s length to avoid any wisp of smoke. I looked at the rocks below and then back to the cigar. It had to be done. It was me or the cigar. I released my grip and watched the cigar tumble through the air in a slow motion downward spiral. With morbid fascination I could not take my eyes away as it slammed into the crags and sent ash flying towards all points of the compass. It was over. Wow. What a strange cigar. I have heard many describe cigars as consistent and never really knew any cigars not to be until this one. It says in the description that this smoke is short filler from their other blends. This cigar is pretty much a brand mega-sampler all in one smoke. If you want to taste the full range, you only need to smoke one of these. Of course the downside to this is you won’t know which blend you are smoking at any given time! I would really like to know what the first few puffs were but I don’t know if I want to suffer through a bunch of five packs of dirty peanuts! Overall rating = BAD!

Re: Cheap Cigar Review 05 RB Fundadores Longfellow
Thanks a bunch!
On a limited budget, it's always good to know what's good and what's not. Strangely enough, I've been finding myself spending some cash on higher priced sticks, and more than that on singles of newer cheap stuff, just to see what's around. Sometimes I wonder if I'm missing out on the mid-grade stuff...

Thanks for the replies.
The buck a stick price point can be a bit brutal at times. Anything over $1.50 to $2.00 a stick and your chances of success increase exponentially. At a buck a stick or less I have only come across two that I can say were a good value. They were Fire by Indian Tabac at CBid and Super Premium 2nds at CBid as well. Oh yeah, AD720 gifted me some 1876 and they were smokeable. I will be picking up some more of all three of these at some point......like when I get a bigger humi!

Thanks for the review. Sorry your experience didn't remain pleasing. The only short filler I can handle currently is the Taboo Value Blend. Sometimes I think they are a great stick, other times just OK. For less than a buck a stick, I can't complain.
Better luck next time.
