Perdomo Reserve Champagne Robusto Review

Perdomo Reserve Champagne

Specs:
Size: Robusto 5 X 54
Wrapper: Connecticut
Country: Nicaragua

Review:
Construction: Excellent
Burn: Excellent
Draw: Good
Strength: Mild
Flavor: Good

I may have been over excited about this one. It might get better with age. I hate to throw Perdomo under the bus because I’ve had quite a few great Perdomo cigars. Here’s the but…

I was expecting the buttery, nutty and super smooth sensation that accompanies some of the best sticks in this wrapper and it just never developed. Yeah it was a little nutty, and it wasn’t harsh but it wasn’t well balanced or complex either. Not a bad smoke but I expected more.

To contrast my review here is what Tabacalero Perdomo says:

From http://www.perdomocigars.com/perdomoreserve.html “Champagne: The gold label is a limited, seasonal release with a golden U.S. Connecticut shade wrapper over six years lending a mild, smooth creamy cigar smoking experience”

Re: Perdomo Reserve Champagne Robusto

Sorry you didn't care for it. The Champagne is one of my favorite morning/after lunch smokes.

How long did you let it rest for? I've found they are a little harsh right off the truck but mellow considerably after a couple months.

Overzelous... I grabed it right out of the box and lit it up in the store. I took another one home with me to make the pre-light pics. It's still in the humidor. I will go back and try it in a month or 2.

I had a Lot 23 a few weeks ago right in the store that was great. I guess you take your chances when you do that.

Re: Perdomo Reserve Champagne Robusto

I did not care for the Champagne, I have tried a handful of them and they all seemed to fall short. The Lot 23 is one of my favorite Perdomo blends for my taste, not to mention the price point. I found the Habanos to be quite good, especially the Corojo.

Re: Perdomo Reserve Champagne Robusto

The longer these sit the better they get. But they are favorite of mine anyway even right of the truck.

I think what happens sometimes with mild smokes is people forget they are a mild smoke. I'm not saying it should be like smoking air or not be complex at all but when I pick up one of these, or a RP Connecticut I know what I am in for. I'm not expecting a complex cigar and thats why I grab one.

But I can admit that mild shouldn't equal boring.

That being said it is entirely possible the cigar WAS a dud or flat. Or maybe it just didn't agree with your tastes. And that's cool. That's why it is a good thing there are up-teen million different kinds.

Re: Perdomo Reserve Champagne Robusto

I smoked a couple just off the truck and didn't like them, but several months later it was a better smoke. I have one more left in the humidor to smoke and if it's as good as the last one, I will buy some more.

Montecristo is my favorite because of it's complex balance of flavors and the silky smooth feel. It's a mild smoke, but I can taste nuts, butter, leather, tobacco, wood and pepper.

I expected half of this from the Champagne, and I was let down. That's not to say some in the box can deliver more. I've had Montecristos that were duds. Probably 2 out of 5 mild cigars I try poop out. I guess it's hard to be complex when your so mild.

Bolder cigars sometimes are overpowerd by one particular flavor... I guess thats just as bad.

don't worry, O'm a big Perdomo fan... I'll be trying this agian in a few months.

Yep, we are on the same page 100%. I get what you are saying.

Have you tried the RP Connecticut?

Re: Perdomo Reserve Champagne Robusto

It may have had something to do with the vitola, also.
I find that these have a much creamier mellow flavor
in the Toro & Churchill sizes than the Robustos.

Excellent point; I also recommend the Toro, Torpedo or Churchill.

I tried the Vintage 1999 Connecticut:

I was a little disapointed with that as well... I was hoping for something mroe like the Ashton Heritage. I was impressed with that one... wish I had done a review on it. Heck, I might run get a new one and do a review on it.

SmokN5Fish (if I can address you both at once): Will do. I know I've giving this one another shot so I'll take your advice and look for the torpedo.
