Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo Review

i'm still new to cigars (just started a few weeks ago).. so i'm not very good at describing flavors..
especial from this cigar.. this cigar was like a flavor explosion..
anyway.. on with my attempt at a review..

i've had this cigar sitting in my humidor for about 2 weeks..
yesterday (sunday) afternoon, i decided to go meet up with my girlfriend and take a walk around sunken meadow (suffolk, ny)..
it just happened to be a nice day (just windy)..

nothing like a nice walk along the beach (boardwalk) with a beautiful girl, and a beatiful cigar..
i used a Xikar mean sardine to cut the cigar.. and my colibri tri-cutta to light it up..
i had to find a walk to hide behind since it was windy..
even the first few light up puffs tasted good from this cigar..
the cigars that i've smoked until now haven't had the greatest taste during light up (i usually spit the funkified saliva after the cigar is ready to go)..
but this cigar started off full blast.. slight chocolate, slight roated nuttiness, and nice peppery spice..
the smoke was nice and thick.. smelled a little sweet...
after about an inch to 1.5in down.. the spice mellowed out.. and it became pretty mild and relaxing(perfect for the nice walk)..
that's when the chocolate and nuttiness came out most..
the ash held up pretty well considering how windy it was..
it finally decided to let go at about 1.5 inches..
it was the white/silver gray i was expecting..
it was actually medium gray with dark spots..
about half way in.. the chocolate started to fade.. and the nuttiness stuck around..
the chocolate eventually tasted like cocoa powder (not hot chocolate)..
kind of bittersweet, i suppose..

towards the end, the cocoa and nuts were there.. and that nice spice from the beginning came right back..
it also started getting a slight leathery aftertaste..

if i could've i would've smoked this cigar to the nub..
the smoke never became hot or unpleasant.. the tastes were never dull or overpowering..

my girlfriend wanted to take pictures, so unfortunately the cigar went out when there was about 1.5 - 2 inches left..
i didn't want to ruin the flavor by relighting it so close to the end..
because of the wind (and the picture interuptions).. i had to adjust the burn once..
other than that.. the cigar burned pretty well... evening itself out except that one..

all in all, an hour well spent..
the great part is that i found a local shop that sells them for 12.50..

so, if i'm ever in the mood for another (this was my only one).. i kno where to go..
this review doesn't do this cigar justice..
i had the natural.. i've heard the maduro is even better
(it's already on my list of to-gets)..

thanks for readin..

Nice review! I've been thinking about these for a long time now... just too pricey for me.. after all 12.50 for a stick? I just got 8 premiums for 15 shipped... that's more what I look for... but a great review, all the same, and makes me want to try one!

The maduro is one of my favorite cigars. You'll probably like it more. Great review

That was a nice review.

It's always nice to find a local B&M that you can get anni's for MSRP or less too.

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo

thanks for the positive comments, everyone..

illuminatus, you're right.. 12.50 is pricey for a stick(that's why i only had one).. but as a special occasion stick, i think these are worth every penny..

Dr Stogie Fresh, thanks.. that's reassuring to hear.. i've actually checked out your website and even tried your program..
i wouldn't mind being a rater.. sounds like it'd be fun.. i think i need to develop my palate a bit more, tho..

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo

I had one of those on Thanksgiving night, in New Hyde Park . It had the Padron quality I expected, my usual smokes are Padron 2000 Maduros. However, I don't feel it was worth 3 times the price of the 2000 (3.50 - 12.50). I recently purchased 2 1926 robustos in the Maduro for 15 each plus a free leather cigar case, thanks cigar auctioneer, hopefully those will be "worth it" to me.

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo

@ sirxlaughs - nice review! I too prefer the 64 anni (maddie version)... great smoke. I just ordered another box of them today (principe's... nice short smoke when you've got 30 minutes or less)... this will be my 5th box this year... guess I like them! I have a stash of 1926 maddies that I leave alone b/c I prefer the 64 anni's over them... but all padrons are quite good IMO. Try the maddie next time - the chocolate flavor is quite strong in those.

Good review.

Yeah, you gotta try the maduro... just gotta. Hey what's the name of your local shop?

Re: Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo

If I can find a maduro for a good price(i'm just a semi-broke college student) then I'll be jumping on it.
The shop near me that had the Anni's I think only had the naturals(which are fine by me too ).
The shop's name is Fortune Smoke Shop (i think).

After looking at the pictures, I don't think people were giving me weird looks because of the cigar anymore. Might be time for a haircut and some sleep.

That's what everyone says. But the reality is that everyone has different tastes and experiences with cigars. We want people as raters who like light, medium and/or full bodied cigars. Dark wrappers, light wrappers, green wrappers and everything in between. People want to read ratings that they relate with. Since we have a policy of "rating what we have," this tends to narrow the scope of each individual's rating since what we have, is what we buy, and what we buy tends to be what we like (and/or what we can afford). The more people we have rating, the more people we will reach with new and different cigars, at different price points, flavors, experiences, preferred drink pairings, and storires of cigar smoking rituals.
