Red face REO by Rocky Patel Review

The cigar shop near my has had a big event a few weeks ago. Many reps were there from several brands, including a couple of guys from RP. They talked me into try a REO so I picked a torpedo. I must say this was the worse RP cigar I have tried since an Indian Tabac Fuente . Strong, but no taste. Really just a straight, plain, nothing to it cigar. I really like the vintage and sungrown lines, I haven't tried the edge. But don't waste your money on the REO.

Taste is subjective so I totally disagree, I love this new stick.

I'm not sure about love, but I like it too. I've had a few and enjoyed them all. The Vibe, on the other hand, I didn't care for at all.

Re: REO by Rocky Patel

I kind of agree with your opinion. I'm just not that much against it. Here's what I wrote up in my database on the Robusto I had;

"A med bodied cigar. Const, burn, and draw all good. Flavor was of coffee but nothing else. Smoke was weak smelling but plentifull. A decent smoke but not at $3.00 ea. Tabac Super feurte maduros much better."

I found that the taste was pretty much one dimensional and strong. I like strong sticks but they have to be smooth. The REO is not what I would call smooth in taste.

I'm with you on this. I enjoyed this smoke. At the last Herf, I spoke with Ed Ortega, who makes both this and the Vibe. He told me that he changed the wrapper on the Vibe and was going to release the cigar with the new wrapper. So, I'm up to give it another shot when it is released.

This cigar just did not do anything for me as well. I love the Edge, Sungrown and really enjoy both cam legends. I don't know where the REO fits in.

I had another just yesterday, just to confirm how I feel about these. Yep, I love 'em. I don't know, just hits the spot for me. I've tried each size and I would have to say I liked the Chairman best.

I found the REO to be this way too. On the strong side and slightly harsh. Might benefit with another year of age on it. Mine had poor draw and I had to relight it frequently. Plus there just wasn't any depth to the taste.

Hmmm, this thread is pretty interesting and definitely proves what NCRadioMan said:

I love all of these sticks from Rocky; Vintage 1990, Vintage 1992, Sun Grown and The Edge is one of my new all time favorites.

I met Eddie Ortega last week, as I am local to him and went into his shop in Plantation, FL.

I got a few REOs and Vibes from him. He told me if I like The Edge that I would like the REO.

He was almost right. I don't "like" them. I "love" them. I thought the Vibe was very good too.

Re: REO by Rocky Patel

With a few agreements to my take on this cigar but also quite a few rebukes I decided to give them another try. I got an all time, at least for me, steal on CB the weekend before last for some RP '92 Toro's (10 for 27), since it was the weekend I tried to add to the order with any other deals I could get. Well, I picked up 5 REO rubusto's for 11 bucks. Just got threw trying the first of the order and still have same opinion. I'm really not sure why it's classified as a medium to full unless lack of flavor and harshness is the criteria. RP should have his name on this dog. I also picked up a 5 pack of IT classic teepees for a few bucks less. Not in the class of the vintage or sun grown line but a smokable cigar that at least tastes half way desent.

Re: REO by Rocky Patel

I must agree with ng iint and Jeff I have found them lacking ,however I have only smoked 5 of the Edeg at $5.00 a stick. Maybe what is needed is some time in the humidor 6 months or so, it is however good to know that their is a cigar to fit the taste of everyone.

Re: REO by Rocky Patel

This has truly taught me that taste is subjective. I just finished my second Reo and really enjoyed it. No burn problems whatsoever and great taste. I'm definitely buying more.

Yep...these are made by Rocky Patel for Eric Espinoza and Eddie Ortega of United Tobacco in Plantation, FL...EO, also the owner of Series X....

R = Rocky
E = Eric (or Espinoza, take your pick)
O = Ortega

Re: REO by Rocky Patel

The Rocky's perplex me, as they do my dog (Junior)...

He likes the feel and taste of the RP (Gotta' break him of the habit!!), but he finds it a bit harsh at the halfway point.

Then again, he's a dog.
