$0.50 Battle: CFO vs. Black and Mild Review

Cigars: CFO Reserve #7 vs. Black and Mild
Cost: $0.50

I'm going to keep it simple. Big thanks to AD720 and smokeyscotch from the Puff for Pennies MaW.

This is an old shoot out for me. Both are cheapies, the CFO is a long-filler hand made, and the BnM is a short-filler machine made. Not quite a comparison, the only thing in common is the price.

BnM:
I still have no clue what kind of paper the BnM wrapper is made out of. The ash was lousy and I had to keep tapping it for fear that it would fall off on me. Surprisingly, it was very consistent. Flavor was a little below an average smoke, but still smokeable. The aroma is great, it smells just like pipe tobacco.

CFO:
The taste was better than average. A little on the harsh side, but it had some nice flavor and it had much more to offer than a typical $0.50 bundle cigar should. If this had been a blind test, I would never have suspected this to be a cheap cigar. The problems I had were burn issues. The pics didn't do show it so well, but this thing burned crooked and never straightened out.

Thoughts:
All in all, they were both good. My money is on the CFO, but the BnM was decent. This wasn't so much a shoot out, since it wasn't really a fair battle (I still have no clue what paper that BnM wrapper is made of ). The only downside is I just can't pick up a bundle of the CFOs due to lack of space. I wish they sold 5ers or 10ers. I find myself smoking much better stuff now as well.

I think the paper has reconstituted tobacco or something like that in it.

Nice job, Alan--I love the offbeat reviews!

I have 2 CFOs resting quietly from trades, might have to light one up soon. My son smokes B&Ms (not sure which variety.) I've tried to entice him over to other sticks, even flavored cigars, but no dice. Anyway, here's what their product page says: "The cigars are filled with aromatic pipe tobacco, wrapped in a homogenized wrapper and binder." So I think those wrappers are made from milk.

Re: $0.50 Battle: CFO vs. Black and Mild

Thanks for the reviews. If the recession gets really bad there may be a lot more reviews like this. :-(

I may have told this story before, but we old-timers are known to repeat stuff. :-)

One day my sister comes to visit and sneaks into my office where I store a ridiculous number of cigars. She dosen't recognize any of them until she opens the drawer where I kept some unhumidified machine made smokes that had been gifted to me over the years by relatives that knew "I smoked cigars" and thought all cigars were sold at gas stations and drug stores.

She grabs a couple of packages of Black and Milds and says "I smoke those. You have enough cigars. You won't mind if I take 'em, right."

:-)

(I just wished she could have noticed that were a couple of old Cremosas still lying around. ;-) )

When you see the words on the package that the contents are "mostly" tobacco products, my Dad used to say there was a portion of camel shit included.

Great review! I love these off-beat reviews!

The BnM wrapper is proprietary! It's kinda like not being able to see inside a pork rind plant. Maybe we don't want to.

great review.

I googled black and mild...and found this very disturbing article...

How to Freak a Black & Mild Cigar This Wiki how-to article will tell you how to "Champ" or remove the harsh filter paper from inside a Black & Mild cigar. The reason for the removal of the filter paper is for a smoother, more pleasurable smoke.

I dont think that most people would fill them back up with tabaco.

That's what I thought...but apparently removing the binder is a real technique to improve the flavor...strange.
