Review: La Gloria Cubana, Serie R Limitada 2005

It’s Friday night, the end of a long week, and I open my cabinet humi to look for a stogie that will last long enough to reassess my life’s goals and quaff a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape. I need look no further than the La Gloria Cubana, Serie R Limitada 2005.

My eyes are literally bugging out of my head as I look over the vast expanse that makes up the La Gloria Limited. The Serie R line was initiated in 1999 and the first special-edition humidor was produced in 2003 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the line. A special blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan filler, a Nicaraguan binder, and an aged Connecticut broadleaf maduro wrapper round out this monster cigar.

At nearly 8 inches in length and a 62 ring gauge, this stogie bears a striking resemblance to a telephone pole. The wrapper is beautiful: dark with small to medium sized veins. In fact, it’s hard to imagine not a serious blemish in this much real estate, yet none exist. The cigar is firm to the touch, yet supple enough to insure that it has been properly humidified. Putting the stogie up to my nose for a waft, I smell light notes of coffee, nuts and tobacco.

I’m ready to rock and roll. If I don’t light this puppy soon, I may run out of evening with which to smoke it. The light is uneventful, except for the fact that I nearly ran my lighter out of fuel toasting the enormous foot on this dawg.

The first few puffs lead me to believe that the draw may be a bit too firm, until it dawns on me that the distance from the burning end of this smoke and my mouth may have something to do with this effect.

The first inch or so of the smoke is smooth and toasty, medium bodied and medium flavored. Just a tease of what lies ahead.

I’m at the one-third mark, and just when I was thinking that this cigar was uncharacteristically mild for a La Gloria, bamm! The flavor and body jacks up to a 7... on a 5 point scale! This is what La Gloria Cubanas are all about. Big flavor and a body that’s chewable. Not too subtle either, just “in your face,” knee-buckling good. I tap the ash off every inch or so and the medium gray bunch falls flush with the foot.

The last half of this cigar was killer. Truly a great cigar. Two full hours of pleasure. I can’t wait to try this one again after some aging. I recommend this smoke for those that prefer big-bodied and flavored cigars.

Bubba,

You can get a lot of Serie R LGC. They're sold all over. But the special sizes found in the Limitada are very difficult to find. I don't know anyone who wants to sell the cigars without the box. Maybe somebody else will know.

Yes! I bought a box of the Regalias (Perfecto). It's a lighter smoke but very flavorful and an excellent construction.

I rated it on the

Great smoke.
