El Mejor Emerald Toro Review

I've smoked quite a few of these since I discovered them back around year end. Here's the review of my latest smoke.

Humidor time: 8 months

Appearance: an interesting looking stick, in its cedar wrap and shaggy foot. Not the prettiest thing you'll ever smoke, with some small lumps showing, but well packed and solid.

Prelight: draw was good, not too loose, and some flavors of cedar (from the sleeve, no doubt). Lighting the shaggy foot is a bit interesting -- wasn't exactly sure at first how to go about it, but the shaggy leaf lights easily enough and produces a fairly even burn by the time it reached the wrapper. As the cigar progresses, the burn line wavers some, but no serious problems. Ash is a bit dark, and watch out: it can drop on you when you're not expecting it. Lots of smoke.

Flavor: the flavor at the start is earthy and cedary, but it changes once the burn hits the wrapper. Mild to medium in body at first, it's smooth and relatively creamy. Once the wrapper joined the party, the flavor became richer and exhibited the characteristic corojo tang. Not bad at all. Flavor builds to a solid medium, but it stays smooth. It's not terribly complex, although I found some spice, the cinnamon/nutmeg kind, not peppery. The flavor gets more harsh and less pleasant near the band; it's not one to nub.

Overall: a very respectable cigar and a good choice in a budget cigar. I think these are a CI exclusive, but you can find good bargains on them, especially on the Devil Site.

Nice review. I picked up a box of 20 a few months ago for $31 on c-bid. They aren't a bad stick for the price.

Re: El Mejor Emerald Toro

I just lit one of these, and having a WTF moment with the shaggy foot...

It took a while to light. The shaggy end is making a big mess, spreading apart as it burns. Set it down for a second, it just about goes out. Pick it up, puff puff puff puff, FINALLY get some smoke, then it produces a virtual smokescreen for the next 15 seconds.

This is weird. No smoke, TONS of smoke, almost goes out, repeat.

What did I do wrong? Or are all shaggy's like this?

Well, once past the shaggy bit it went out once. After a relight, it's burned perfectly the whole way, holds ash well, smokes fine, good draw.

The flavor on the other hand, while not bad, is not earning a place on the "buy more" list.
