Padilla 6X54 Belicoso Obsidian Review

I recently picked up 20 of these smokes on Cbid and although the band on this cigar may be labeled 2006 Limitado, I suspect these bands were left over from the "first limitado" run a couple of years ago. The story I heard was that a 2nd 'run' was recently produced and was sold only to Cigars Int. and I suspect they were still relatively fresh.

The cigar itself, seemed to be well constructed and wrapped in a very thick, dark and somewhat veiny wrapper. The burn was good and produced a good 1 1/2 in. of white ash and plenty of smoke. I was a little surprised by the mildness of the first couple of inches of the cigar with the primary flavors being pepper and spice, but the strength seemed to build during the second half of the stick.

Since I've only smoked a couple of these and I suspect they're still on the young side, I plan to age the rest for at least 6 months and see if that can coax a little additional flavor out of these black beauties.

I wouldn't pay anywhere near the MSRP, put if you can pick up a few when they're on sale, they're worth a shot.

I agree, I just received my bundle as well and they seem very fresh. I'll follow you and age for 6 months and give them a try then

Thanks for the review. Just out of curiousity, how have your Obsidians burned? Mine were basically fireproof until I let them sit for 6 months at 60-62%. And they still burn crooked but not nearly as bad. I love the flavor of these sticks but I am kinda leary of buying any more.

The 2 that I have smoked showed little in the way of burn problems and what little there was corrected itself with no need for touch ups. I use heavyTupperware or Rubbermaid containers with a layer of that new heavy Glad "sticky" wrapper as an additional sealer when I plan to leave a container closed for a period of time for aging and was surprised to find the RH was 71% at 73 degrees after 48 hrs in the container with no humidification devices, so these must have been stored by CI in fairly humid conditions.

You might want to try bringing the RH up a few points and see if that helps any. I don't have a clue as to why, but some cigars just burn better at specific RH ranges and hopefully that will be true in your case if a little additional moisture will help with the burn.

Just out of curiosity, what effect did the 6 months of aging have on your sticks? But if you've had them for as long as 6 months they my very well have come from the first "Limitado" batch. Err, I think. Darn cigar manufacturers, you just can't put any faith in such things as Limitado any more.

Mine are from the second batch, the one you have. I have had them for at least 4 months. They are way better now, and I suspect will continue to improve.I bought a second bundle of them and will not touch them for a few months. They are a great value smoke if you grab them for 40 bucks on cbid.

I've picked up several bundles of these over the past year.
Definitely want to age these at least 4 months, tho longer is better.
Nice flavors of coffee & dark chocolate, good amount of strength to them (fuller side of medium). They remind me a lot of the Torano Exodus 1959, but without the cedar, & a bit stronger. Hope this helps. And yes, I wouldn't pay more than $2.25/stick (including shipping cost).

Thanks Tim, that's good to hear. I recently bought mine at a private auction on cbid. They put out 400 lots of 20 cigars with the bidding starting at 39.99 and only got bids on about 300 lots! Had me a little worried for a while. Now I wish I would have bought a second lot. Oh well, I'm willing to bet they have plenty left and hopefully we'll see another sale in the near future.

I bought three bundles on that deal I hate to see my "head count" on Obsidian's fall too much below 50.

Re: Padilla 6X54 Belicoso Obsidian

I'm glad to hear so many say that these improve with age...

I picked-up one a couple of weeks ago at CI and smoked it within 72 hours. I really was looking forward to smoking this, not sure why...maybe the look, the band the reviews...whatever. But, I really wanted it to be good. Instead I suspect it taste like Not sure what tastes like but this had to be close!

Rearranging sticks the other day I found another that's been sitting at least 3 months. I'll let it rest till the new year and try it again!

Thanks for giving me new hope with this stick!!

I bought a bundle of these also. Tried to burn one after a couple days and wouldn't draw to save your life. I put the rest in the humi and will let them sit for several months.

This comes from only a somewhat reliable source, but CI supposidly purchased in the vicinity of 60,000 of those Belicosos, so hopefully you can keep that "head count" at a "comfortable" number and at very reasonable prices in the future.

I've intended to give those Partagas Black a try after kind of acquiring a taste for the Spanish Rosado San Augustin a few months back. A little on the pricy side, at least for me, to burn every day, but they're a damn good stick.

Be sure she writes a comprehensive review. Hopefully this site will still be up, but it looks like Cigar Review got hacked again and will be up on a "read only" basis in a couple of days for the next 2 weeks. Twice in 10 days. Could be an opening for a webmaster.

I was thinking more along the lines of openings for members of a firing squad.
