Punch Rothschild Double Maduro Review

This cigar came out of my box pass and I smoked it today on a walk.

Appearence: A rustic looking cigar, with a dark, dark, oily wrapper. There was a very large vein running the length of the cigar and the cap looked kind of funny.
6

Construction/Burn/Ash: Despite its appearence, the cigar was well constructed. This cigar is pack to the brim with filler. The rothschild burned evenly, even in the wind. The ash was a medium grey with an almost brownish tint to it, and very firm.
8

Flavor: This cigar started out on the mild side, with some slight woody characters, then built up into a rich, spicy, coffee noted cigar. Even though it starts mild, don't be fooled, by the end of the cigar your mouth in tingling from all the robust flavors.
8.5

Overall experience: I give this cigar an 8 overall. A nice short smoke that starts mild and builds up to a finale that you won't forget.

big_bish,

Thanks for the review. Glad you liked the smoke. Now you know why it is one of my favorite everyday smokes. The Punch Rothschid double maduros can be had for $2 a stick from many net vendors.

Always a staple of mine in the summer time and especially gratifying when you crack a box of 50 to find dark, oily covered little treats piled on top of one another. Have been dissapointed half the time to find not so dark dry looking wrappers but for $2.00 a stick you can't beat it.

duffer,

If wrappers don't have that nice oily look, just put them in the humidor with the humidity on the high side (72-73)and in a couple of weeks they'll look and smoke great. I can't suggest this for all Hondurans or even the entire Punch line, but it works well for the double maduro rothschilds. I've been experimenting with how a variety of smokes do in a higher humidty environment.

rjs, I have found the same to be true with this particular cigar. I think it stores better at higher RH, or at least it looks better. A very good cigar btw.

I am what I am.

Nice tip on bringing out the sheen on the wrapper RJS! I have always been a fan of that Honduran taste which some consider to be tough complimented by the sweetness of the next door neighbors product.

RE: Punch Rothschild Double Maduro

DUFFER,

The regular Punch line (not to be confused with Deluxe and Grand Cru) is actually not a pure Honduran smoke, although most people assume it is. Once again, the country of origin (where the cigar is made) is not always the same as the origin of the tobaccos used.

I agree that the Rothschild double maduro very much has that "Honduran" taste. But the filler actually is a blend with Honduran, Dominican, and Nicaraguan tobacco. The natural wrapper is Ecuadorian and the double maduro is Connecticut shade.

Did it, and that was not all that great... :-( Posted a review, comparing this to the new Rare Corojo version

RE: Punch Rothschild Double Maduro

I've heard a few people comment on giving these resting time. Try letting them sleep and try them again later. I thought it was a great smoke.

RE: Punch Rothschild Double Maduro

big_bish,

I had another one tonight, after dinner, and it was completely another story... Maybe the one I smoked was not great, maybe a few days resting helped, maybe it was just me that day but... a great cigar! :-)

I've heard that these get really great with time. Give them another month and you'll like them even more.

Personally I like the Punch Elite MM (aka Oscuro), and yes .. they do get better with age .. the hard part is leaving them in the cab that long.

RE: Punch Rothschild Double Maduro

I found it really hard to let this cigar sit because it was so darn oily. I'd be pawing through my humidor and see the sheen of the oil out of the corner of my eye, and like a bird on shiny object, I pounced.
