Noob Adoption August Review...LFD Ligero

Just now getting around to post this review for August. I decided to review the La Flor Dominicana Ligero from the awesome selection from MarkinCA.

Pre-light: The construction of the cigar was rather rugged. There where quite a few veins throughout and the color was a little different from the head to the foot. I would describe the color as gunstock oak. The cigar felt pretty solid and well packed with tobacco. I clipped the cap with my trusty Palio and torched up the foot with my Colibi lighter.

1st Third: The smoke coming from the foot of the cigar is very pleasant to smell and it has a blueish hue that is gorgeous. I can definetly taste the Ligero immediately. The taste is very noticable in the back of my throat and tounge. I would describe it as a liquorish flavor. I detect a slight salty, pepper taste as well. So far, the taste is not very interesting to me as it is rather bland.

2nd Third: The burn has been razor sharp and the ash held on respectably for about 1.5 inches. The ash was white with fine specs of black, really nice. The flavor picked up a bit, but still not much more complex than the first third. Just a mellow liquorice taste. The pepper and salt flavor is gone now. I'm starting to feel the strength of the ligero a little now.

Final Third: Burn remains pretty straight. The flavor unfortunately remained the same also. Not a bad flavor mind you, just a little boring. It seems almost like the cigar tries to make up for the lack of complexity with strength because it really started getting me dizzy towards the end.

Overall, I would say this is a decent cigar, just not my preferred flavor profile. This is the third cigar from LFD I have tried with the other two being the "Chisel" and the Coronado. I found this cigar to be similar in taste to the Chisel though not nearly as strong. The Coronado was fantastic. I would rate this cigar a 7.5 out of 10. I enjoyed the experience, but I probably won't be buying another one. Lately, I've been leaning towards mild to medium smokes and I am not a big fan of Ligero tobacco.

Thanks to Mark for the August smokes and I look forward to the Sept. selection!

Jay

Nice review on the LFD L400 Jay. Its a stick that you simply need to take your time with and not rush to conclusion. I find the flavor and strength graduates very slightly from beginning to end, with the aroma and smoke very pleasing. In addition, I love the pre-lite aroma and sheen emanating from the wrapper on this one.

One thing to remember, if the nic starts to buzz you, don't forget to hit the back of your tongue with a teaspoon of cane sugar. Let it dissolve there and then wash it down with 8oz of H2O. Its amazing how different your stomach will feel thereafter.

I'll keep in mind your focus on mild-medium body cigars for your October selection. Regarding your September selection, you should find at least one there you'll enjoy. Take care

It took me awhile to get used to ligero as well (maybe 5-6 years?). Great review!

Thanks Mark,

By preferring mild to medium I am referring to strength instead of flavor. I have found several cigars that I'm enjoying now that are bold on taste but not powerhouse cigars in regards to strength. I used to think that only maduros had that rich flavor that I love, but I have found that I am now particular to Conn. shade, Cameroon, and particularly the Conn. broadleaf wrappers found on cigars such as the La Riqueza's. Hopefully, this is an evolution of my palate!

Re: Noob Adoption August Review...LFD Ligero

I've only had one of these. It was too peppery for my tastes. It wasn't 100% of the time, but when it hit, it was so strong and overpowering that it diminished what seemed like an otherwise very good cigar. I have two more, and I will smoke them before making my decision. If that one turns out to be typical, I'll move on to something else. Maybe one of their other lines would be more to my liking. Construction, draw and burn were all excellent, tons of thick smoke. The appearance was a little... "rustic". Kinda rough and lumpy.
