Victor Sinclair 55 Corojo Review

After sitting in my humidor for a month or two, I tried a Victor Sinclair 55 (five country blend, aged five years). It has been at around 67% humidity.

I initially punched this one. Before lighting it, I noted a pleasant slightly sweet pre-light draw. The wrapper was not bad to look at, though it did have obvious one vein. It was firm the entire length.

I had second thoughts on the punch on an initial pre-light draw, since it seemed tight. I lit it up after toasting the foot pretty thoroughly and sure enough, it was quite a tight draw. I prefer a bit tight to a bit loose, though, and I gave it a run with the punch for a few draws. After maybe a half inch in I decided to clip it. It was still a tight draw and remained so through the first half.

Burn was very even all the way through and it required no attention whatsoever to remain so. It has a slightly spicy taste on the draw, with a slightly sweet, maybe mild choclate follow through about a half second after exit. It was pretty consistent in this regard, with the follow through taste beginning to come closer to the actual draw at about the one-half mark. It did loosen up slightly at the halfway point, and I noticed the spice was slightly stronger on the draw at this point. I would say that it did not produce a great amount of smoke, but I can't say that for sure because it was windy out tonight. I was smoking in my screen porch with the lights off, so I can't say for sure what color the smoke was, but it appeared to be fairly light in color. I picked up a fair amount of taste with my nose on this one, as opposed to a tounge-only thing, if you know what I mean.

I smoked it to about where the band would have been. It was a cool to slightly warm smoke. It did not get hot as far as I smoked it. Ash was pretty firm and held well. I don't know what color the ash was since I never turned on the lights.

This would fall, in my subjective opinion, into the mild/medium category. It was a very smooth and pretty consistent stogie that I wouldn't classify as purely mild, but it did not have a huge bite, and despite not having had a cigar for about eight or nine days (we've been fighting a flu-like bug in our house), there was no real cigar buzz.

The taste was very nice, and this one could be smoked, I think, most any time of the day, but would be a nice after lunch cigar. I was sipping some Crown Royal and Coke with the cigar, if that makes any difference, and it was not a bad combination at all.

My only fault was with the draw. I lightly squeezed the cigar but did not want to overdo it, but overall the draw was too tight, even after it loosened up a little after the mid-way point. I got a fiver of these off of the devilsite, so maybe in a few months I'll fire another one up and see if it has the same draw as this one.

Anyone else try one of these? I would be interested in hearing their impression to see if my take on it was anything close to what others would be.

I have smoked a few (12) and it seems that you are about right on all counts . But, the ones that I smoked had a good draw and a good deal of smoke to go with it .These are a good bit milder then I like but not a bad smoke. All and all your review is dead on and a very good one .

Good review. Informative. Too bad about the draw. I may bum one of these off you in the future and give it a try.

Kinda wonder how this one stacked up against the Torano Signature stick you smoked over here at Christmas in terms of taste (know the Torano had a better draw).

I've had both and to my taste the CT Sig is far superior. But what do I know.

Thanks. I've not been in the hobby for long, and I wonder if I am tasting the same things others are. I'll have to give another one a go if the tight draw is not the norm in these.

I'd agree with you on the CT. Svillekid gave me one a week or two back at the family Christmas gettogether (it was the last cigar I smoked before everyone in the family got sick) so it was my previous smoke before the '55'. And that is not a knock on the '55' either. I thought that the '55' was a darned decent smoke (other than the draw) on the milder end of the spectrum, and if the draw improves on the rest I'll enjoy another one sometime. The Taranos was a bit stronger than the '55' and I'd say a bit more flavorful as well. It drew well, and I am going have to get me some of those, since I have none in my humi (a really nice 200 count Thompson courtesy of Svillekid and Ninja Vanish for Christmas). In my limited experience I guess I've only had three Taranos, but each one was a very nice cigar, for sure.

Exactly how I would describe the difference. I have two left and will save them for a nice quiet time.

Thanks for the review, I will have to try one of these, I have a VS Bohemian I am going to try, first VS ever. I like the few Toranos I tasted though, they are very good cigars.

If the Bohemiam is the corollo ginsing, it is a decent smoke and a hell of a deal for the price they can be obtained for off cbid (usually about $1 per stick on box purchases). I got a box of 25 of the CT signatures for less than $3 per stick off Cbid last month ($6.50 each at my B & M), also a hell of a deal for a cigar that is quickly becoming my "go-to" smoke.

Rest assure, TideRoll will soon have a fiver of the CT Sigs in his possession!!
