El Rey del Mundo Robusto Larga Review

Time to revisit an old friend. Too often we forget about smokes like this in pursuing the 'next big thing'.
And I'll bet lots of newbies never had some of these old reliables.
I had this one for my Sunday breakfast, 8:15 A.M. -

A 6-1/2 x 54 ring Robusto Larga, Honduras binder & filler with Conneticut wrapper. A toothy medium-brown wrapper, well-rolled, with just a slight give when pressed.

On lighting, initial flavors are light creamy coffee with toasted nuts & a touch of floral & sugary sweetness. Like a lighter Partagas (NC), it is on the milder side if medium, & nicely complements my morning coffee.

Excellent draw, producing lots of smoke, it gets creamier as I progress past the 1st inch.

Soon after, I get a small wrapper split, but it doesn't adversely affect the burn too much, so I let it be.

It corrects itself by the next inch with no more splitting.

About 2-12" in, it picks up more of a woody flavor. I knock the ash for the first time, It's a nice whitish-gray, very light & flaky.
In the second half, the strength increases somewhat, adding more charcoal to the mix, but still quite enjoyable. Another 1/2", & it's back to the sweet creamy smoothness.

I put it down with about 1-1/2" left at 10:10 A.M., total time elapsed just under 2 hours.

Overall, a very pleasant smoke, especially in the morning. The flavors mix well and stay very balanced. If you like the 5 Vegas Gold, but don't like the 'bite' in the back of the throat it sometimes gives, try the ERDM.

Awesome! I just bought one of these for no other reason than all "The Guys" at the B&M like them, and JR touts them ridiculously as "one of the best cigars in world." Glad to know I have more reenforcement behind it.

I seem to recall something about these being made or blended by Padron? Even better!

However, I think it'd take me more than 2 hours to smoke this aptly-named "larga."

This is the cigar I started on. I was in NJ on a business trip and went to the JR store in Whippany and tried one of these. I always keep some of the Robusto Larga Obscuro around in the humidor.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is with the tissue-wrapped ones? mine is wrapped in tissue and looks very nice, but it's also a good bit darker looking under the tissue than the OP's.

Some sizes are tissue wrapped and others are cedar wrapped. Not sure how they chose which ones to tissue wrap, but I remember reading somewhere that the tissue wrap is for tradition because that's how they use to wrap cigars long ago.

The really dark wrapper leaf is the "Oscuro". It's actually black in color, comes from the top of the plant and is picked last. Here's a link to descriptions of some of the wrapper leafs.
