Montesino Pyramid Review

This is from the same Fuente cigar tasting event described in the Robusto review.

This cigar is notable because of the VSG wrapper. The same Ecuadorian grown VSG wrapper used on the Ashton VSG. When I questioned the Fuente rep about the kind of tobacco, he said probably Sumatra or Indonesian. "Just like on the eXtreme!" I quipped.

The Fuente rep said that the wrapper tobacco is the same just like one cigar's Dominican filler is the same as another cigar's Dominican filler. Or that Cuban tobacco is Cuban tobacco..right?
I quickly realized the simplicity of my thinking regarding wrappers. All Sumatra seed Ecuadorian sun grown wrappers are not created equal.

He further explained that Fuente gets 100% of the production from the producer of this wrapper. So much for being "Just like the eXtreme". Anyway....

The wrapper, overall, is dark brown with some oil, but not as dark as a maduro. Not quite as nice looking as the Ashton VSG wrappers, but still good looking. The cigar is firm to the touch. The cigar received a diagonal cut to get more smoke and flavor. The pre-light draw was almost perfect with a noticeable spiciness. Again, typical Fuente construction....good. 8.5

The light was normal with a pleasant aroma that was noticeable in a room with 50 - 60 other cigar smokers! The pyramid burned mostly even. 7.5

The taste was spicy yet smooth. Less spicy than an Avo maduro, but more tobacco flavors came through than an Avo. Earthy with some cedar and spice. A little power in the second half. 8.0 The flavor was consistent throughout the smoke and intensified in the last third. 8.0

Overall, a very nice medium bodied smoke. A good relaxation smoke. Pleasant aroma with some spice and complex flavors. The cigar perfomred well.

I have smoked both sizes of the Montesino Belicosos and do not like the flavor of either. Both come with a natural wrapper only. I think this is the best cigar in the line. It might be hype or fact, but I think the VSG wrapper does the trick. This cigar doesn't pretend to be a full bodied smoke. I think this is a superior medium bodied cigar. The pyramid can be had on the net for about $5/stick. Overall 8.0
