Backstory:
This was a smoke that I received from the JR Halloween trick or treat sampler. It can in a tin of 4 and was accompanied by a tin OF TTT Trinidads amongst other things. I have a lot of friends who are R&J freaks and I have had one or two in the past. They were good cigars, very average, but also very worth it. Maybe it’s because I’m a maduro freak. Regardless, I will examine this and give my fair opinion in the form of a review.

Construction:
The construction was all good. I’m the type of guy that wants an intimate wordless conversation between me and my cigars. The first thing I look at with any girl is her exterior. I mean, you gotta be attracted to someone physically right? (no brainer). I always critique the round-ness and the quality of the shape, These speak to me in ways that other features might not… I mean, if its perfectly round, and consistently firm throughout the construction then it usually means that someone took the time to make good stick right?

Prelit notions:
The draw is a little tight, then again.. you have to take two accounts into factor. One, I like a loose draw anyways. And two, this is a smaller RG cigar than I usually smoke, so its going to be a bit of a difference from me compared to another person who smokes a lot of smaller RG stogie. But, from my experiences, and my willingness to take the smaller RG into account, I will grade it a high B.

The spice is there, its not too overpowering which I assume will show through with the cigar once I light it.

For Starters:
The burn is nice and even. To loosen the draw a little, I employed the idea of drawing fast and drawing often to get those innards soft. And it worked a little bit. Maybe I’m just not made for smaller RG cigars… BUT, the habanos I have smoked have smaller RG’s and hardly every have draw problems. Regardless, the taste starts out a little mellow and has a great satisfaction to the palette.

In the MIX:
We’re about halfway done and the draw has opened up a little more. The smaller RG is something that I’m getting over. The cigar is spicey but muted and the cedar/grassy undertone is pleasant to the lips and palette. For a while there I had felt a little bit of that Cuban twang,… but realized that it must have just been a case of phantom relapse from last night, hehe!

Over the Hill:
Well, we’re rounding third and things are going smoothly. The draw is still as it was when we last checked in but th cigar itself has softened up and heated up, the draw then becomes muted and the flavors become boastful. Kind of a weird little mix, almost like the inside is burning twice as hot since the initial ash. The flavor in the cigar only changed once and it is back to where it was at the 25 minut mar. I smoke cigars kinda fast (my friends tell me) and I realized why, I want the cigar to always be hotter and spicier which in the end really “quenches” my needs.

Finishing up:
It’s a solid smoke. Nothing that knocked my socks off like my first gurkha. But it was a solid smoke. For how hard it heated up I was expecting a little looser of a draw but I guess that’s what you maybe come to expect from a smaller NC cigar… hmm. Regardless I won’t turn down another one.
