Mayorga Maduro Torpedo - A lay-down

PREFACE:
I am on a maduro mission, my primary purpose in life to aquire and try every "M" I can get my hands on. That said, budget being a factor, and a good T25 review being an influence, I scored a couple of fivers on C-bid and let them rest for about a month. I've smoked just three.

CONSTRUCTION / BURN:
A rather rough looking stick, veiny, but the soft box-press makes it comfortable in-hand. Burn is inconsistent (5 corrections required).

BODY / FLAVOR:
I'd put it on the Southern edge of medium. The first inch was rather harsh, but it begins to mellow out to a light espresso flavor as the burn progresses. Still, I was left wanting more flavor.

OVERALL:
I think this cigar wants to grow up to be a Panza or Montesino... But it's still a juvenile. And so, it will be confined to its room in the coolerdor until it shows better behavior. I've calendared another try in May, and will report back if there's any noticable improvement.

(As usual, my impressions are purely subjective.)

At one time the Mayorga Gordito Torpedo could be bought from JRs in a "humidor" box of 40 for $70. Aging improves the flavor but not the burn in my experience. The Mayorga "high octane" line burns better and you can get 27 Robustos in rather unique packaging for $51 shipped. Now that the Gorditas sell in the range of $55/20 they simply aren't worth picking up anymore IMHO. Spend a bunch less and get the Diesel Fuerte made by the same guy (Nestor Plasencia), with the same type of wrapper (Costa Rican Maduro); or spend just a bit more for the much better Padron Delicias or 2000.

I hope it's not frowned upon to resurrect old threads here--though this one isn't really too old.

These've been a source of frustration to me--picked up a fiver from TodaysCigar and I've had two, one right after getting them and one earlier tonight. Both have been plagued by burn issues--tunneling and canoeing both. Today the cherry was a good 3/4"-1" inside the wrapper not long after I lit. I guess I'll try another in another month...

I've not smoked the Torp but really like the Mayorga Toro maduro. This cigar, too, has some burn issues but is very flavorful to me. The wrapper is very rough in appearance and tough to light and keep up with the rest of the cigar. I do spend a lot of time touching up the wrapper so it keeps up. The flavor goes down quick when the burn is screwed up. Touch up the wrapper and it's back to smoking great.

I've smoked a bunch of the Hi Octane Robusto maduros and have too many in my cooler. I prefer the Toro but both cigars are pretty good bang for the buck smokes.

Maybe I'll have to try keeping a closer watch on the burn, then. I like what I get from them when they're behaving.

I've noticed that the Gorditos have this interesting "bullseye" pattern in the ash--looking at the burning end of the cigar, it's a ring of lighter ash on the outside, then a ring of darker ash, then (IIRC) a bit more light ash in the middle. Are the toros like that also?

I've never noticed. I'm too busy concentrating on the other end

Re: Mayorga Maduro Torpedo - A lay-down

My Mayorga's also had burn and major draw issues. I thought the flavor was good but it's been a while since I've had one. If the draw was better I probably would've smoke them all up but alas they (10 or so) are are sitting in my humi. I believe I have Robustos an maybe a torpedo or two.

Does anyone know if age will help the draw on these. In general it does, doesn't it?
