Partagas Serie D no. 1 EL 2004
I've had this EL in my humidor for about 8 months now, and it's been killing my just looking at it. Well, tonight I wanted something different, and as I have never had an EL, I figured why not. So I went up to my room, put on a movie I had never seen (High Anxiety. Mel Brooks. 1977), and lit up this gorgeous cigar.
Lighting it up was tricky. It resisted my vain attemts at toasting it with a match. So I took out my trusty $6.00 torch lighter and we were off. The initial burn was somewhat uneven, but it evened out after the first inch or so. The first inch was your typical Partagas flavor, spicy and woody, but with something else there. I couldn't quite place what it was, but I liked it. ![]() After that first inch of spice, it shifted gears quite dramatically. It turned into a tangy sweetness with a touch of wood and chocolate. The smoke was very thick and oily. The smell was too good for words. The final third was the best. The flavor shifted up a few gears, as did the smoke volume. There were some vanilla notes, as well as some cedar and a slight spice. ![]() This cigar took me on an amazing 2 hour journey. I've never had a more complex cigar. It's worth getting a box, if you can still find them. ![]() My first EL band! ![]()

By the way, the movie was excellent too.

Nice review. What do you think of the EL vs. the regular line? The EL's are intended to be Cuba's answer to the NC specials and limited editions. I've smoked a few EL's of various lineage and always felt a bit disappointed - they were't all that better than the regualr line and some were just nothing.

While I really enjoyed it, I've certainly had better. It was the only EL I've had, so I really don't have much to compare it to. But I've had some regular vitolas that were amazing. I had a PSD4 a few months ago that I smoked down to about 1/2". The Cohiba Siglo VI is another stunner.
