La Aroma de Cuba Pyramid Review
I am a HUGE fan of the LAdC Corona Minor. It's my go-to smoke when I don't have a lot of time. An incredible value.
I went to a local B&M, the Beverly Hills Pipe and Tobacco Co., and saw the larger LAdCs in person for the first time, so I picked up a pair of the monster Double Coronas 7.5x52 and a pair of the 6.125x50 Pyramids, the latter of which I'm reviewing my first, below. The owner of the BHP&T Co. is great to shmooze with. It's a family business, a little nervous about Hillarycare-loving Califascist trends and attitudes toward tobacco. Prices are higher on individual sticks as you'd expect with Carl Reiner's tobacco taxes and the overhead of a Beverly Hills storefront, but the conversation is great and I like to support local businesses when I'm buying singles for the first time. It's a terrible thing when B&M's close.Cut: couldn't have been easier to get a perfect cut on the cap. Only my mohel could do a cleaner job. ![]() Light: a little tricky because of the RG. I used a Colibri Firebird torch. Once I evened out the light, it was great and holds the light well. Construction: I'm about halfway through it, and it's perfect. No complaints. I can put it down for a minute or two, take a couple of puffs and it's a nice healthy smokestack again. EASY draw. A little peppery, which I like. The RG on this is 50 and it's made well. Not tight at all. Nice ash, as you'll see below: ![]() ![]() Minor Complaint: turned a little harsh during the last third and seemed to have a harder time keeping a light. When I lost the light, I cut behind the cool ash and relit since there was so much stogie left. After getting past 3/8" of the relit stick, it's improving with about 2.5" to go. I've had it in my humi for about a month since buying it. It also had to weather a few days in the freezer. I don't know if that may have been a factor. I'll age the other one for a few more months and see how that affects it. Smoke: Throws off HUGE volumes of blue-gray smoke. I like LOTS of smoke. The big RG helps, of course. As I said above... EASY draw. Flavor: First 3/4" was negligible, as many stogies are. But once I got past that point, this is a good stick. I'm not sure how to define it, but there's a tell-tale LAdC flavor, which I like. Probably the LAdC wrapper. (I think so, because when I tasted my fingers, I liked the slight sweetness, but I'm a maduro fan. This isn't a maduro, but this is a better than average wrapper.) I still prefer the Corona Minor, of which I've never had a dud. I'm finding that blowing out a little more often as I approach the nub, the flavor is improving again. Bottom line: I'm not sure I'd buy this by the box, but I'd be a grinnin' Gorilla if someone offered me one of these long-lasting smokes. I'm looking forward to the Double Corona, a veritable Shaqulle O'Neill-sized monster that is the biggest stick in my humi and which seems like it would last a week.Y'all can check out the T25 reviews, of which there are only 3 right now, here. The reviews seem fair. |

Re: La Aroma de Cuba Pyramid
An excellent review Aaron. Very comprehensive.
Question, why did the smoke have to "weather a few days in the freezer"? Was it infected with the "beetlejuice"? I say try another one before deciding not to buy a box. I love La Aroma de Cuba cigars and one of my favorite sizes is a torpedo. That said, I have never tried the torpedo size in La Aroma, only the churchill and robusto. Nice work. Doc |

I agree, the torpedo size was great. A nice step up from the corona minor for when I have more time. I haven't had the robusto... yet. I have a few other boxes to save up to buy before this one, though. I wouldn't mind half a dozen or so to have them on hand. As I really don't have any local herfing buddies to share my duplicates with, I really don't burn through stogies that rapidly. I'm still way under the medical study threshhold where no studies have been done on herfer health for those smoking <= 1/day. |
