Ghurka Legend Masterblend Review
Ghurka Legend Masterblend Churchill (7 x 52)
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Binder: Cameroon Filler: Dominican Drink: Dos Equis XX Amber Lager Presentation: Imposing looking, brutish stick. Magnificent aroma. Large attractive golden band that reads "Ghurka", and in script "Legend", second black and gold band that reads "Masterblender". Part of a Ghurka sampler purchased from Thompson, this stick cost me $4.00. Flavor: Dense and dark flavors of black coffee, bitter earth and sea salt. One of the more coffee-like cigars I have had the pleasure of smoking. Not exactly loaded with complexity, but powerful. Dense clouds of bluish-white smoke, curious and extremely pleasurable "saltiness". Smokability: Not one of the more visually appealing smokes I have ever had. Ragged strands project out of the burning end of the cigar. Ragged and uneven burn, but no touch-ups or re-fires required. Flawless draw. I just "let it do its thing" and smoked deeply and heavily on it. Salt-and-pepper ash. Very satisfying smoke. Overall: Very good. Good solid B / B+. Quite pleased to have three more sleeping in the humidor. A warrior's smoke.

Re: Ghurka Legend Masterblend
Very nice review HR. I have smoked a couple of these myself and I can definitely relate.

Oooops, I see I mis-spelled "strands". I like pretty much all of the Ghurkas I've ever smoked. I like the "Perfectos". I need to order a bunch of those. Looks like just about all the major on-line cigar vendors have sales on Ghurkas. I paid $60.00 for the 15 Ghurkas from Thompson, but they did throw in a cheapie humidor. Usable for your basic day-to-day el-cheapo smokes.

Do you like Thompson? I've heard both good and bad things about ordering from there. I did get a really nice 20 ct from them when I first started smoking cigars but rarely use it now that I have my 300 ct

Thompson's prices seem higher than most other on-line cigar sites, but I've gotten some nice deals, too. Like I have 18 real nice cigars on order for $59.95. Nice Fuente and Punch and Upmann. Stuff I like, not just a bunch of garbage. That's around half of what I pay for cigars in the local tobacco shops. Oh and you get to pick which cigars you want each month, not just some random assortments. So far, so good I guess. But I have ordered catalogs from CI, Famous, Holt's, JR, etc.

I have seen some pretty good deals in their catalog but I've heard that their smokes don't always arrive in good condition. I take it that this hasn't been the case with you as you are a return Thompson customer. What particular smokes do you like, your "top 5" if you will.

The Cuesta-Rey Centro Fino Sungrowns I bought DID seem a bit "dry". The first one I smoked had a split wrapper and then I made the nooby mistake of trying to cut past the split and the whole damn thing fell apart. I'm letting the remaining nine out of the box "chill out" for a while in the humidor. So the jury is still out on that one. I've had more defective smokes out of the ones I bought from local cigar shops, but that might just be coincidence.
Favorite smokes? I don't think I really have enough experience to say just yet, but at this point in time, I guess: 1. Fuente Grand Reserva Robusto Maduro 2. H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon 3. La Perla Black Pearl Morado 4. Cuesta-Rey Centro Fino Sungrown 5. Partagas (various)

PS: I secretly only smoke Opus Xs, God of Fires, Partagas Habanas and H. Upmann Habanas.
Oh yeah, and Jose Lopezeseses. I just didn't want to come across as a cigar snob. Or anything. ![]()
