Thumbs up Maxima Reserva; my review

I smoked a Puros Indios Maxima Reserva today ( A toro) and found it very good:

I got a 5'er over a week ago, and unlike my usual practice of firing one up right away, I let these sit in my humi, and I'm glad I did.
The pre-light tasting wasn't spectacular and didn't give any hints. I toasted it wanting desperately NOT to screw up the light; I didn't
The wrapper has a weird mottled brown color, but is solidly constructed. The tobacco itself has a sweet smell to it before lighting. This isn't the prettiest cigar I have ever smoked
The burn was slightly uneven but self corrected ( my lighting wasn't perfect).
The first third was very mild and smooth, which surprised me; it is billed as a "powerful smoke". The aroma was pleasant, and had a sweet woodiness to it. The ash was a greyish color and very solid; I flicked it off after 2 1/2 inches as I walked to the mailbox.
The first half of the smoke was mild with barely detectable spiceiness, but there was a definite sweet caramel taste and perhaps some leather or cocao; I couldn't tell right away. The second half though was as if something swtiched on the power, and a cedary spice appeared, and that caramel like sweetness, and leather. Now none of these tastes were overpowering in the second half but, they arrived and made a presence for the remainder of the smoke without harshness. I liked this smoke a lot, probably because of what it promises if I let them rest a while longer. I smoked this down to 3/4 of an inch, and I still taste a sweetness on my palatte 45 minutes later.

Re: Maxima Reserva; my review

I forgot to add in my initial review; the wrapper was kind of toothy and very oily. It was not bad looking just strange with the dark brown spots all over it.

Donp,

My compiments on your review, and also on your ability to characterize the PI line in general!

They're UGLY DUCKLINGS!!!!

But sometimes, the ugly ones have much more character and flavor than the "pretty" ones!

These cigars are among those that will reward you with a few months' rest in the humi!

(As usual, my impressions and opinions are purely subjective)

Re: Maxima Reserva; my review

LOL, I had pulled one of these from my humidor for smoking tonight. Boy do I have something to look forward to. Mine have been resting for about 3 weeks now. Sigh.... the anticipation.

Thanks Palm55, and I agree but, like Stogie Kanobie, the waiting is the hardest part Oh and btw, so far your impressions and opinions are right on the money and make a lot of sense; I and my fellow newbies I'm sure, appreciate it

Don,

If you find the regular PI line appealing... Do yourself a favor!

Check out the PI "Special-Aged" Maduros Piramides... Score a Sixer, and let them rest. These are wonderfully mellow cigars, but you'd better be ready for a TWO-hour experience.

I smoked a Puros Indios about 3 years ago when I first started out on cigars. It tasted like hell and gave me a headache, but I want to go at them again. I think my try this one.....I do like the old Cuba Aliados.

Oh my goodness. I really sincerely will start taking my laptop with me to the shack I smoke in. I wrote probably a 1 page review in my mind while I smoked it. Your review above was dead on. What shocked me the most was the consistency. The first 2/3 of this stick was as smoothe and creamy as they come. I typically experience one or two spots on a cigar where I have to just walk away for a good minute or two. Not here. I actually caught my self trying to MAKE this stick taste bad. I puffed on it frantically to get more strength via smoke, to see if I cauld say "Ah ha! caught you you bad flavor you." Nada, the strength increased, but it remained creamy. Admittedly it is a fairly long smoke. After 45 minutes or so of creamy I thought... Hmn... The burn... perfect. Consistency... perfect. Draw..... perfect. This is excellent but is it starting to bore me? It was almost too perfect. Then wham.... That nuttiness hit me along with something else I couldn't place (and never have been able to). I can't tell if it is the Cocoa you mentioned or the leathery taste. So I enjoyed a very pleasant change for the final 1/3 of the cigar. I am SO GLAD I got a box of these. They are definitely going into the aging box once it is built. I'll pull 3 or 4 for the humidor. Last night is what this is all about. Had I had my laptop I fear I would have written a book about that cigar alone. This cigar was impressive and well balanced. Looking forward to another in a few months.

Re: Maxima Reserva; my review

Stogie:
Your review was excellent, and provides additional insight into this smoke; it's great to get your perspective. I agree too about what you referred to as "last night, is what it's all about", for me it's all about the moments, and what occurs in them. A good cigar fills the brief snippets of time nicely
I'm glad you enjoyed the PI, your review confirmed for me that I got a good one to look forward to.

Palm: I scored a couple of sixers a couple of days ago off CBid, and am looking forward to getting them. How long would you recommend they rest?

I just got two mezos from a cbid I won. I'm letting them rest a while. I did pull one out to smell it. Man! It smells like chit and has a kind of sweet tobacco smell at the same time I expect that with a bit more time at reast, these are gonna be something
