La Aurora Preferidos Robusto Review
Went up to my favorite local B&M today with a buddy as he was planning on buying a box. I really wasn't in the market for any smokes but as I was walking around I saw these and remembered that I had wanted to try one. So I dutifully laid out my 10 bucks and took the stick home with me. The construction on this stick was very nice the wrapper wasn't too oily and had a bit of a tooth to it. The smell on it was somewhat dusty with a dried grass scent. Punched the cap and lit her up. First couple of puffs were just blah, nothing special at all and this lasted most of the way through. It had a dull grey ash that was somewhat flaky but rather strong. The last 1/3 of this stick though was horrible, it had an ammonia-ish test that I have noticed in some sticks before. The smell and the taste reminded my of a bathroom that had just been cleaned.
Overall I was rather disappointed, the taste wasn't complex at all and just was a dusty grassy taste the whole way through. This is the second time recently that I have had a bad experience with an (expensive) Preferidos so in the future I think i will be giving them a pass. |

Re: La Aurora Preferidos Robusto Review
I've noticed the ammonia scent in many of the premium sticks I've bought lately, to include Opus and Anejo. It really does ruin the experience. I'm not sure if this implies a problem in production, perhaps too much are being produced too quickly. It's unfortunate that you have to wait a year or more to enjoy a nice stick, but it must be done. With Opus and Anejo, the reward is worth it.

Re: La Aurora Preferidos Robusto Review
Strong ammonia means they are still fermenting. Best you can do is try a purge. Sounds like a bad stick all the way. I had a bad one yesterday and put it out of its misery about half way through. Wasn't a $10 stick though.

Re: La Aurora Preferidos Robusto Review
I try to give all my cigars 90 days in the humi before smoking them, although I am not always successful at doing so.
Of the La Aurora cigars, I prefer both 100 Anos and 1495 lines to the Preferidos. Since the Preferidos robusto is new, I suspect it was just young, as the preferidos perfectos I have smoked have all been very nice. -Matt- |

Re: La Aurora Preferidos Robusto Review
I'm sorry to hear of your bad experience with the cigar. Don't give up on La Aurora just yet.
I STRONGLY suggest the La Aurora 100 Anos or 1495. Pick up one or two, put them in the humi and come back to them later. You'll be well-rewarded.

Re: La Aurora Preferidos Robusto Review
Yeah the preferidos are specially rolled and the tobacco should have all the ammonia gone by the time you get it. They do let them rest before shipping ( and that room is wonderful). The 100 anos is a fantastic cigar...personally much better than anything else out there. The flavors are subtle and not in your face...but then again the tobacco for them started aging in 1995. The 1495s are also good smokes. BUT if you can find them the Leon Jimenes Don Fernando #4 is wonderful. (Matt 2 brothers had em for a while and may get some more.)

Re: La Aurora Preferidos Robusto Review
I agree with Dr. Stogie Fresh. That smoke needed more time to age, but if it had a "Grassy" taste, then it was probably done for already. There's plenty of other good smokes out there.
