Review: Padr髇 40th anni 1926 Serie Torpedo

It's been nearly 3 months since I last reviewed this cigar. I love reviewing this smoke. That抯 because I have smoked quite a few from this batch and I know they will be good. It抯 just amazing the kind of consistency and quality I have come to expect from Padr髇 cigars, but especially this one. This was part of a special 40th anniversary line that was packaged in a limited edition, hand-painted humidor. Four trays with 10 cigars per tray. They have been nearly perfect, each one of them.

Every time I gaze upon one of these smokes I am awed by the gorgeous look and feel. This chocolate brown wonder has a wrapper that is as near to flawless as can be expected from a cigar: veinless and nicely boxed-pressed with a slight flair toward the foot. Actually, one could say that the look is boring, since each cigar is nearly identical, having been rubber stamped out of the Padr髇 Perfection Machine. Yes, one COULD say that, but I won抰. It抯 an absolute marvel that Padr髇 can achieve such consistency in a product fashioned totalmente a mano.

Anyway, time to get down to the business of smoking, so I clip the end with my Pali cutter and get ready to torch it. When I am torching a cigar of this quality, I always reach for my Lotus L230 Torch Lighter. This baby has a surgically precise flame and I can always count on it for flame length, width and accuracy. The light is perfect and I settle back to enjoy.

I have decided to pair this cigar with a malt liquor by Sierra Nevada called Pale Bock. This is a malt that comes out yearly that is very hard to come by. At 7% alcohol, it has a kick but is medium in body and, I hope, will not overpower the cigar.

The torpedo starts off with coffee and chocolate flavors that match well with the spicy yet feint hop bite of the beer. The beer finishes crisp and does not compete with the cigar. I like that.

The ash on this dark devil is a light gray and holds on for dear life. The burn overall is even and the draw is perfect. I accidentally drop the ash off at an inch, a perfectly formed pellet sits at the bottom of my Stinky (that抯 a brand name folks) ashtray. There is a slight cone under the ash that doesn抰 look terminal, so I disregard it for the time being.

The already beautiful wrapper starts to glisten with oil as it warms up and, if possible, looks even better. The smoke that heaves from each puff is rich and luxuriant, seemingly heavier than air.

The second half of the cigar shows flavors that are more intense and complex. Every time I smoke one of these to the nub I find myself wishing that someone had invented a great cigar roach clip. I smoke it until my fingers can no longer take the heat and then sadly drop the butt into my ashtray. Another great smoke.

I can抰 say enough good things about this cigar. It is clearly one of the best cigars I抳e ever smoked. If I had to pick one bad thing about the cigar it抯 that it is nearly impossible to follow it up with any other cigar.

Doc

I have been lucky enough to smoke several and by far they are my tops. I treat myself several times a year always worth the money. I will go as far as saying it is the best cigar made.

Re: Review: Padr髇 40th anni 1926 Serie Torpedo

These sticks are just absolutely sublime. Complex and changing flavors, impeccable construction and they draw like an absolute dream. I'd smoke them every day if I could afford to ($25 MSRP and $29 at my local shop). This is not just a larger vitola in the 1926 line - which would be enjoyable enough in it's own right - this is a completely different experience. Just special...

Smoked one the other day with a big, fat Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. One more in the humi. Need to sell a kidney and buy more...

I haven't had the chance to try one of the 40th anniv. yet, but have tried the normal 1926 line and LOVE them. Just curious, how do the two compare to one another?

Excellent review Doc, you paint quite the picture. Haven't been lucky enough to smoke one of these yet, but you definitely made the idea more tantalizing!!

I've only been around this place for a short while, but your reviews kick ass Doc. I've never had the 40th anni, but I still remember the No. 2 (robusto) from the 1926 serie. I smoked it at my local B&M over a year ago and it blew me away. I might have to revisit soon.

Great review. Left me drooling. Never had the 40th either. Hell they don't even sell Pardon's here at my local B&M. Might have to try and find these next time I hit the road traveling. Definitely on my To Smoke list. Thanks Doc.

Re: Review: Padr髇 40th anni 1926 Serie Torpedo

with the situation with my grandmother and reading a recent thread about smoking the good stuff, I reached for my lone 40th Torp Maduro today. It was the most expensive stick in my collection.

I am not sure if it was the conditions or what but this is probably one of the best cigars, if not the best, that I have ever had. It was definitely the smoothest "strong" cigar that I have had to date. You never know what the future brings so enjoy what you have (and post reviews and comments).

I LOVE the PAM/PAN's IMO, they are some of the best cigars out there. I can assure you if I ever come across a 40th anni, I'll pick one up to try!

Thanks for the review!

Bobb,

call dukecitycigars.com and talk to Al. He is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet and he is a very high volume Padron dealer. He will let you know when they come in. You can also try leafandale.com (local to me) but they only get them a couple of times a year. It is a GREAT cigar.

Nice review. Is that the maduro? I have a natural chilling in my humidor. I couldn't find a maduro anywhere so I settled for natural.
