The celebration of 18 years

I posted a thread earlier today about how it was my 18th anniversary of being in the Coast Guard. In that thread I posted a poll of what I should smoke tonight to celebrate. All the cigars I put in the poll were cigars I had never smoked before, and would be reviewing. The winner (by a largish margin) was the Padron 1926 80th Anniversary in Maduro. Here is my reveiw. Everything I wrote in my journal is in quotes.

Quote:
Padron 1926 80th Anniversary Maduro
6.25"X52 Box pressed Perfecto
I received this cigar from a very generous member of this board (you know who you are), but I failed to put it in my inventory, so I forget who it was, or when I received it.

Prelight: Not a beautiful cigar, but impressive all the same. Dark maduro wrapper with a rough looking torpedo cap. Wrapper is toothy and has a nice dusting of ploom/blume. Foot is tapered and sharply cut, but has a blemish near the foot, and some cracks here and there that don't look like they will affect the burn. Cigar has a nice prelight draw, not easy, not tight.

Light: mmmmmmmmm smooth. A tiny it of pepper in the back of the palate, but nothing that makes it too spicy or harsh. Toasty leathery note to it.
*At this point I called my Dad. The conversation went like this:

Me "Hey man, do you know what today is?"
Dad "Is it your birthday?" "No Dad, that was in March," I said.
Dad "So what is it then?" "It's the 10th of July, 2008. It's Thursday," I said.
"So what is today", says my Dad. I said; "Dad, today I have been in the Coast Guard for half of my life. Today is my 18th anniversary." He said; "Ron, I never told you how proud I am of you. I am very proud of you son." He was right, he never had told me, but I remember when I graduated from basic training, I could see it in his eyes...*

Half way through: Holy shit. This cigar rocks the friggen house! Coffee bean, cocoa, unsweetened chocolate, butter and cream. Burn started to tunnel a bit while on the phone, but it settled right out with no touch ups. Such an enjoyable cigar, I forgot about writing!

There really isn't much to say about this cigar. The flavor is all there. The after tastes is almost a floral reminder of all the different notes in the smoke. I taste, see and feel exactly why people adore this cigar so much, it is the real deal. Powerful yet smooth. I feel the burning in my stomach from the sheer power of this smoke.

There is no more I can write. I know, with 2-3 inches left that I will smoke this cigar to the very end. I know I will feel heartache when it ends, knowing that these fantastic cigars, while not terribly hard to come by, are simply out of my range ($280 for a box of , and I will always pine for another one. It is truly a sad day today, knowing that I have smoked my only one, my first and quite possibly my last. I do not know if I can feel the same about another.
This was, by far, the best cigar that I have tasted up to this point. God willing, I will buy more.....

gratz on hitting 18 years on the job!
I hit that not quite a month ago myself, but if you managed to get a decent place to work, the time goes by like nothing

Thank you for your service. You certainly deserve a fantastic cigar to mark this occasion. So, you got to smoke your cigar with your dad. I know, I know. It isn't exactly smoking "with" your father, but still...you were smoking a great cigar while your dad was conversing and showing his pride in your accomplishments and achievements. Kudos to you. Today is a good day.
