Genuine by Puros Indios, #2 Review

This is actually a review plus a question.

I picked out this smoke to ease the the misery of doing research late on a Friday night. It also seemed that I had finally managed, after several months, to get my stogies in the right range of humidity.

Regardless I wasn't expecting much from the cigar itself.

The construction was good. Nothing excellent but no flaws either than a cap that was not clean as it could have been. The wrapper was a medium bown colorado wrapper and the cigar was firm with a slight amount of give. For the size it seemed a bit lighter I imagined, so I thought the draw would be a bit loose. The only real problem with the presentation of the cigar is the band itself. It looks like something I could have printed from my table top printer and it cheapened the cigar.

After looking at it, a quick toast of the stick revealed some leather and heavy tobacco smell which was rather pleasant

Now for the main event.

The light went flawlessly and the burn continued to be excellent throughout the smoke with no need for touch ups. From the get-go there were large amounts of smoke with the draw was just a shade too easy. However that allowed me to put the stick down for a minute or two at a time and not have to worry about re-lighting it.

The taste was pretty basic, but welcome: leather, straw, and hints of something else that my unrefined palate could not pick out. What really struck me however was how smooth this cigar was even though it was a medium strength stick. There was not even a hint of bitterness even towards the last quarter of the cigar where I always anticipate some unpleasantness.

The whole affair lasted an hour and a half and I was pleased throughout the whole thing. For the two dollars these seem to go for at CI I would definitely buy another round of them (if those guys would ship to Canada).

Now for the question:

But before I try to get some more of these I just want to make sure this experience was not unique to me. The sticks were so smooth I began to wonder how they could sell for just 2$.

Then I thought that maybe I was smoking some aged cigars. I bought these from a guy who seems to be getting rid of old stock and I think these might have been among the old sticks.

So is this experience typical of genuine puros indios, or am I getting the benefit of aging?

The Reyes sticks like the Puros Indios seems to be hot and cold for some here. Personally, I think the Puros Indios are a great low cost stick (and doesn't that crappy label underscore cheap?). I have noticed that between some which I bought maybe six months ago along with some gifted ones which are probably at least a year or two old, they do seem to get a bit better with some time on them (I guess that would be the case with most decent cigars, though). The ones I have smokes mirror your experience: very smooth, a distinctive and not unpleasant flavor profile which is quite straightforward. I've given quite a few of these away to local friends who want one of my cigars. They don't know the difference and I don't feel like I've given them a dog rocket.

And, nice review.

There may (or may not be, but there is) a couple different Puros Indios heading East right now... One of them is a favorite of mine. Let me know what you think it is when the time comes (Wednesday, BTW)

Re: Genuine by Puros Indios, #2

From what I know of genuine sticks they were made by Rolando Reyes SR. He knows his stuff. I haven't tried the Genuine yet. But, I know the puros Indios sticks benefit from some resting. The cigar is made by a master and therefore I would not be surprised by all that you found by smoking one of his cigars.
If you liked this one, you now know about it, and therefore it would be a safe purchse of them again in the future.
Thanks for the review I now know more than I did.

Sure will. I had one last week. As I say, I think they are a good smoke, and easy on the wallet. I bought a box of twenty five of a smaller RG Puros Indios off cbid a while back and those are the ones I give out to my non-regular cigar toking friends, basically because I know most folks will like them and can get through them in a fairly short time. I also have several different types by Reyes, such as a couple of maximum reserves or something to that effect, and a handful of others in the larger RGs.

(FWIW)... I have many of the PI in storage (my favorites of which are the double-maduro perles and the Special Aged Pyrimides Maduros).

These sticks will deliver on delivery, or they'll deliver MORE after delivery.

On the other hand, Reyes has produced some rather remarkable dog sticks! It's kinda' like the Perdomos... You rools the dice, and you takes your chances!
