Macanudo 1968 Cigar Review
Mention Macanudo to a cigar smoker and many seasoned cigar smokers will cringe. That pretty much sums up the view of Macanudo in my world. But when the 1968 launched, I jumped at the chance to get 3 sticks for 7.95 back in July. I smoked one, decided it was a dog rocket and put the other 2 in my humidor with a promise to smoke them when I finally saw them show up in stores. Well the time has come, and today I share those results with you.
Cigar: Macanudo 1968 Origin: Dominican Republic Size: 7 x 49 (Churchill) Wrapper: Honduran San Agustin Binder: Habano Connecticut Filler: Dominican, Nicaraguan (Esteli), Nicaraguan (Ometepe) Strength: Medium to Full Appearance & Construction (18/20): I was a little surprised to see this smoke had a triple cap albeit a sloppy one. The cigar is chocolate in color with some thin veins but they do not take away from the overall appearance of this slightly spongy cigar. Flavor & Notes (26/30): The pre-light flavors of this stick were better than I expected with notes of caramel and spice. The first third offered some hints of vanilla, spice and caramel. As we approached the second third the notes of caramel remained with a touch of coffee. The final third of the smoke the caramel and coffee remained and some slight mocha was introduced. Burn/Ash/Draw (21/25): The cigar had a nice draw with only the slightest resistance. The ash had a slight flake to it, but held on admirably while the burn had some issues. A few times the burn line got wavy and while I was tempted to touch it up it corrected itself around the half way point of the smoke Overall (21/25): While this is not your father Macanudo it is still a Macanudo. It is also extremely different then when I first got the sampler pack. Aging definitely did them wonders and while it is a cigar that deserves to be smoked again, the price point will keep me away from smoking it on a regular basis. Rating: 86 Price: 9.00 |
