Gurkha Legends Rare Breed Review
After about four weeks in my humi, I decided to give the Gurkha Rare Breed a try. I had been looking forward to this stogie. At a Ring gauge of 52 and a length of 8", it is about the biggest smoke I have had.
![]() I picked upt his Gurkha maduro JR Cigar's SCHIP sale. I got a 5-pack of these suckers for $20. Struck me as a good deal considering the size. I have only ever seen this cigar discussed in the context of a Gurkha cabinet. For what it is worth, this was my first Gurkha, so my expectations were high. The weather outside was about 32 degrees and snowy. I had a glass of Makers' Mark and a fire in the chimenea to keep me warm. ![]() In one word this smoke was . . . mild. I toasted the foot and the aroma was quite pleasant. It got my expectations up a little more than this smoke could satisfy. The construction was superb. An even, cool burn from start to finish. The wrapper was a bit loose at the cap at first, but it was likely my shoddy cut. ![]() I could also tell that the tobacco in this stogie was some of the finest that I had smoked. But, I prefer a stronger cigar. This never gave me the bite that I had hoped for. ![]() As a former cigarette smoker, I always try to inhale at least one drag off a cigar to see how it goes. This one was way easy. I also exhale through the ole shnoz as often as possible to grasp the full aroma/taste. Again, no problems with this one, though some cigars bite the ole nostrils. I certainly can't describe this smoke as complex. It seemed constant from start to finish over the course of 1.5 hours. It gave hints of nuttiness and never was harsh. Again, mild is the only way to describe it. I imagine that an 8" long mild smoke has its place in the world. I'm just not sure it is in my humidor. Unless the rest of the 5-pack gives me something different, I don't think I'll revisit this blend. Are there Gurkhas that i should try with more bite, or is this about par for the course? |

Re: Gurkha Legends Rare Breed Review
Gurkhas always confound me with the VAST number of blends and names.
I came across your review in looking for info on the RARE BREED. JR $20 shipped/5er I don't mind mild but this looks VERY mild... Thanks Tom

If you want something stronger, try the Gurkha Black Puro, or my favorite, the Doble Maduro.
Fantastic construction and flavor. Both are in my top 10. |

Re: Gurkha Legends Rare Breed Review
i agree with some of you the construction and draw is very good but living in ireland i smoke alot of cubans, so a while ago i sent off for a few packs ( 5 packs of 12s) of gurkas from cheap to dear and i found they all are of the very mild side some were very pepery, and some just flavour less. i would not how ever turn one down but you should try a few padron 2000,3000 and 5000s they do pack a little punch and i see them very cheap over with you the pyrimid is also a good one to try also taste alittle like a cuban.Hope this is useful to someone.
