Cigar Review: Ambos Mundos Sumatra

The Ambos Mundos which translates to Two Worlds is being billed as a value smoke. Each cigar has the same blend with the exception of the wrapper. Today’s review is of Sumatra wrapper which is a follow up to the review I did last week of the Habano wrapper.I’ve been asked a few times which wrapper I prefer and here is my conclusion…

Cigar: Ambos Mundos
Size: 5 x 50
Origin: Nicaragua
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatra
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua

Appearance & Construction (17/20): As stated in my prior review the story behind this cigar is the wrappers did not meet the criteria to be used on the other sticks by Pete Johnson due to blemishes or what have you. Upon study of the Sumatra wrapper you really have to look to find the flaws but they are slightly more noticeable here than on the Habano. The cigar has a loosely packed foot, but that does not reflect in the overall weight of the cigar. The cigar lacks that over all polished look of your typical Pete Johnson stogie.

Flavor & Notes (27/30): The prelight draw on this cigar has a little bit of a peppery bite on the tongue and a slight mocha note on the foot. On the initial light it is obvious this is the more flavorful of the two wrappers with there being some nice notes of nuts and a touch of mocha. The notes however are not smooth, and come across a little rough. Also despite some pepper on the back of the throat there is a little bit of sweetness to this cigar which might sound a little strange. As we approach the second third of the cigar, notes of nuts remain and it is less coarse than the prior third of the smoke. Some faint mocha notes remain and are joined by some coffee notes as well. The final third has definitive tobacco taste with a some coffee notes on the finish.

Burn/Ash/Draw (22/25): The burn on these smokes are slightly worse then then Habano line. The cigar has a jagged line to it, but the ash is very strong and a light shade of gray. I managed to hold on to the ash for 2+ inches before losing it to my shirt. The draw is very free and easy and makes for a very relaxing smoke. I should add I was tempted to touch up the burn, and it could of possibly used one. When I put down my cigar one side of the wrapper had an extra 1/2 inch remaining.

Overall (23/25): All this cigar is a bit rough around the edges, I wonder how they will be if you sit on them for about a year or so. The Sumatra is definitely more complex than the Habano wrapper. I would say these smokes are definitely a bargain at the MSRP of 5.00 and you can find them for less than that if you look around.

Re: Cigar Review: Ambos Mundos Sumatra

I bought one of each and already smoked the habano. It was ok, but I think there are a bunch of sub $5 smokes that beat it. I look forward to comparing my experience with yours on this one.

Nicely done. I preferred the Habano wrapper.

Re: Cigar Review: Ambos Mundos Sumatra

Thanks for the review. I enjoyed one of these earlier this week but the kicker is - not sure if I tried the habano or sumatra. Guess I'll have to revisit the B&M that had them and grab another to verify what I smoked - hate that!
