Sabor Cubano Corona Gorda
After a week of rest in the humidor at 66% I decided to try one of the Sabor Cubanos from the $30 six pack sampler I bought from the Cubanshop.com.
I poured a neat glass of 12 year old Balvenie DoubleWood single malt which proved to be an excellent pairing.
I picked one of the Corona Gordas 6x52. From the ad "This cigar has double Domican ligero and Nicaraguan fillers with a Brazilian wrapper. Our maduro wrappers are "NOT" treated "
I slipped of the cedar wrap and found a nice rich somewhat oily brown wrapper that was free of large veins. It is a nice looking stick. The feel was not hard. The construction was very good.
I caught the well formed cap with my Xikar cutter. The cut was clean. Pre-light draw was very good with the taste of wood and cut grass. I toasted the foot and was met with a nice hint of pepper and spice.
Slowly through the first 1/3 the pepper subside leaving the Christmas spice flavor, cedar, some leather, and hint of semi sweet chocolate. Every so often I picked up a flavor of green tea or cut grass. This continued on into the final 1/3 which picked up some sweet burnt sugar...almost toffee like mixed with cinnamon and cedar. I would call this a medium strength stick with a complex and well balance layering of flavors.
The ash was good and solid..not dropping for 1 to 1 1/2". The ash color was a very light gray with a tan under tones. The burn stayed almost completely straight, never needing any touch up through the hour and 25 minutes it took to smoke.
This is one of the better smokes I have had, ever! At $5 a stick it smokes well out of its price range.
I'm really looking forward to trying one of the highly rated Sabor Cubano Torpedoes. Lately I have been kind of Torpedo kick. If they smoke the same as the Corona Gorda I'm buying a box.
