Carlos Toraņo Casa Toraņo Maduro Lancero

Had this in the humidor for a month or two and decided to try it tonight. I enjoy the fatter-ring Casa Toraņo maduros so I was looking forward to this shape, 7x38. Construction is excellent...nice dark and oily wrapper, well rolled, nice and firm throughout. The pigtail cap was a nice touch as well.

Lighting up I don't get a whole lot that wows me...pretty middle of the road mild flavor of Casa Toraņo, a bit heavier and sweeter on the palate because of the wrapper. Burn is excellent and I get a good long ash going on this. I make a point of not smoking it too fast because I don't want to upset the delicate little ring gauge, as I've heard it can be problematic with the lanceros if they're smoked quickly. I do get a nice load of smoke from this thin cigar, and it sends up a nice, slim single jet of blue smoke in between puffs.

Mid-way I almost put it down because I was getting some real bitter notes that stayed in my mouth for far too long after each puff...not pleasant. However, I'm not one to stop a 7-inch cigar before its time is ripe, so I soldiered on.

Last part I was surprised by a noticeable spice on the tounge which I never experienced with any of the fatter vitolas of this cigar. The bitterness smooths out a little, but the flavor overall is pretty bland and there is a lingering unpleasantness in the aftertaste. Might have been overhumidified, I can't call it, but there was kind of a heavy, sticky, dull taste that stuck around for far too long after each puff. Not pleasant.

Overall I don't think I will buy this particular vitola again. I've enjoyed several of the Toro and Torpedo of this size, which are both north of 50 ring gauge. I'd have to attribute their more balanced and sweet flavor to the more filler they must have...all I really got out of this was a thick and heavy, bitter taste. None of the nice, sweet grass or fresh hay taste and aroma I love about the bigger sizes.

I'll keep smoking Casa Toraņo Maduro, but I'm going to stick to the bigger-ring gauges!

Great review. I love the Robusto version of this, but haven't tried the Lancero yet.

This is one of my favorite sticks. I have only had one bad one in five years. You maybe right about over humidified. These sticks should be kept around 60-65%. Try another one but put is in a dry box first and let it settle. This is usually a very tasty stick if kept proper. Again I say, try another, but don't put it in your humidor. take it home and smoke it right away, or at your local B&M.

Thanks for the review. I've never tried the Lancero but I have tried the Toro and enjoyed it.

You ought to. There are some really good sticks in the line. My personal favorites are the Casa Torano, the Signature and the Exodus 1959 Gold Label. Hard to go wrong with anything Torano.
