Garcia & Garcia My Father No. 2 Belicoso

After burning the roof of my mouth on some Stouffer's Deluxe French Bread Pizza, I decided to head out to my porch for a cigar (well, I had pretty much been looking forward to this all day).

Now, this is what my old porch was like:

You could put your feet up, relax, and no one could disturb you. Also, it was sheltered. I didn't realize how great I had it, until I moved into my girlfriend's place, which has a comparably crappy smoking porch. I guess I should count my blessings, at least I have somewhere to smoke.

These are the chairs. Notice the feminine touch.

Doesn't seem so bad, right?

Oh wait.

It's about 20 yards from the entrance to a 7-11.

The "privacy fence" makes it seem better than it is. There is a nearly constant flow of people and traffic in and out of the lot. It is convenient, but not exactly relaxing.

Not pictured: The "roof" which is just the deck floor from the place above, which has plenty of space between the boards for rain. Rain which is threatening to happen any minute. Screw it, I'm smoking my cigar, even if it means getting an umbrella and looking like a weirdo in front of the 7-11 crowd.

Now enough of my griping. On to the review.

I bought this cigar at a B&M on Saturday. I noticed when cutting it that it seemed just a trifle on the dry side, probably should have let it rest longer.

The cigar has a medium brown wrapper that seems to be densely packed. It is smooth and soft. The wrapper has a slight puffiness to it when squeezed, which reminds me of the heavily padded wall to wall carpet in the dentist's office of my youth. The band is attractive, and pink.

I light it, and immediately think, "Huh. Pepper." That is to say, this started off as a very peppery smoke, which was really working for me. Below the pepper was a strong woody core, which would remain with the cigar till the end.

After a few puffs, it started to rain.

I swore like a sailor, or a golfer.

I brought my computer inside.

When I came back out, it had stopped raining.

I went back inside and got the computer.

After a centimeter or so, I started noticing a subtle leatheriness, and a slight floral aspect. My this is tasty.

Then the ash fell off, thankfully not in my lap. It left this behind:

I'm chalking that up to the small amount of time in my humi. Regardless, the cigar burned great through to the almost-nub. I did not touch it up once, or even think about it.

At this point, the backbone of the cigar beneath the pepper was still there and becoming more rich. The pepper faded out somewhat, but was still present.

Somewhere around here, I was getting another burst of pepper, which again subsided for the remainder of the cigar.

I should note, also, that the resiny flavor that built up in this cigar was very good, and was neither bitter nor overpowered the flavor. It was consistent with the woody flavor I mentioned earlier.

That was good. I will smoke more, but consider it more of a nice change of pace from my normal smokes. Parts of it actually reminded me of a spicy, complex version of a 5 Vegas Cask Strength II.

As a side note, I noticed that there was not a lot of nicotine in this stick.

I have not smoked that vitola of the My Father, I have smoked 3 of the Lanceros and can say that they do seem a bit "woody" and somewhat floral at times.... hardly any spice at all and not strong like I would expect from a Garcia cigar. But I do enjoy them thoroughly. Thanks for the review and the humorous (or tragic) smoking situation. Oh yeah.. nice lighter!

Yeah, it did not seem to be as strong as DPG's other offerings (although I guess his son blended this one?), but this vitola (or particular cigar?) was a spicy smoke.

Andrew that is correct. His son Jaime blended this one in honor of his father. Looks like the Don has taught him well.

Sweet review! I haven't smoked this one yet either, but have a robusto and lancero resting. I personally don't mind a lack of nicotine, so this sounds fine by me!

Great review. Bummer bout the porch situation. Fortunately, there are moments of a cigar that transport us away from the pressing reality.

Re: Garcia & Garcia My Father No. 2 Belicoso

Andrew, glad to hear you picked up on the floral notes also. I reviewed a MF a while back and it was a wonderful experience. Here is a link to it with some good discussion on these.

My Father

The ones I smoked seem to have more spice to them than what you found. Maybe because of the difference in vitolas?

Sorry to hear about the Rain and the pizza burn Andrew. But glad you liked the stogie. My Father #2 is a great stick. Nice review.

Re: Garcia & Garcia My Father No. 2 Belicoso

Thanks for the review! I've only had one of these. Can't remember what size, but I do remember being surprised that it wasn't as peppery as other Pepin blends. It wasn't a bad thing, I really did enjoy it. I can't wait to get my hands on some more.

Re: Garcia & Garcia My Father No. 2 Belicoso

Hmm, looks like these vary a lot in spice! Some say not spicy at all, some say very spicy.

Guess that means we have to try them all to find out?
