Gurkha Louis XIII

Gurkha Louis XIII Robusto Tubo
Price: $23 for 3 on Cbid on 13 March 09
Cigarbid.com Auctions - Lot 695438

Drink: Water
Appearance: Light blotchy wrapper, kind of spongy in some places
Cut: Straight cut with Xicar Xi2
Prelight Aroma: Yup, they infused it with congac
Prelight draw: good resistance, tastes like straight alcohol probably the cognac

Size: 6.0" x 50
Wrapper: Connecticut seed (cant find country grown in)
Binder: Dominican Habano Piloto
Filler: Dominican Habano Piloto

Just fired it up.. dont know why but I expected it to be like an acid but its not and actually pleasant.
The congac flavor lingers on the back of the pallet which the cigar has a smooth buttery connecticut finish.
About 1" in and there is a very very very slight spice starting to poke its head in.
About 2" starting to taste the typical Dominican flavor of tobacco has kind of a zest to it, there is still congac and the buttery smooth CT sweetness on the finish
Flavors are staying consistant at the halfway point with the zesty dominican, slight spice with the same finish since the beginning
Hitting the point right before the band and the spice had faded

This cigar surprised the hell out of me. Upon first inspection with it being spongy and smelling very strong of cognac
I thought it was going to taste like a congac version of an acid and burn horrible. However the flavors were great
and it had a nice razor straight burn through the whole cigar. I wouldnt call this an every day smoke but it was very very enjoyable.
Im not a fan of Gurkhas or connecticut wrapped. Hell, I dont know what possessed me to even bid on it but I am glad I did.
It produced tons of smoke on every enjoyable puff and I was so into the cigar I forgot to take as many pictures as I usually do.
Id give this cigar a solid A for good construction, complexity and overall enjoyability.

Thanks for the review, this sounds like one to try out. I usually don't like the "infused" sticks but this might be a nice change of pace type smoke. Nice pics as well.

Re: Gurkha Louis XIII

I generally dont go for infused cigars either but I got a wild hair this morning and said why not... and was definately pleasantly surprised. It didnt leave any of that sweet nasty taste on my lips or I would have put it down two puffs in. The congac was really only noticable on the finish and was nice with the sweetness of the conneticut wrapper

Re: Gurkha Louis XIII

Sounds tasty. I have some "cigar infusing" jars I bought on Ebay years ago sitting around, and I keep thinking that it would be worth a try to infuse a few experimental sticks with a good cognac or whiskey. Will have to get around to that experiment, but I don't think I'll be starting out with anything tremendously good, probably just something basically tasty and strong enough to stand up to the alcohol.
