A. Fuente Gran Reserva.....terrible?

Bought one at the PX here on the FOB today, after reading good things about it. Paid 5.85 for it. It was the double chateau vitola, natural wrapper, if I remember correctly.

But, it tasted terrible to me. Didn't seem dry or anything (firm butspongy feel, no cracks in wrapper). I had to put it out halfway through. The draw was just fine, plenty of smoke, but there seemed to be a heavy ammonia overtone.

Could this be because of my relatively newbishness (new word) to cigars, or could it just be a bad egg?

Either way, my first taste of Arturo Fuente left a sour taste in my mouth....literally.

On a positive note, I had a Cuesta Ray #95 earlier today that was muy delicioso

Re: A. Fuente Gran Reserva.....terrible?

If it had a strong ammonia taste then chances are the tobacco was too young. This is definitly not the norm for A. Fuente. I would recommend you give this one another shot. Of course it may just be that you don't care for the flavor profile.

would you recommend buying another one, and letting it sit in my humi for a few months first?

See if you can get another one but from a different box. It could take a week or a year for the ammonia to disappear if it is young tobacco.

Re: A. Fuente Gran Reserva.....terrible?

As pointed out, its likely a case of young tobacco and it's likely pervasive throughout that entire box. There are Fuente's that I love, some that leave me flat and some I will flat walk away from. If you really want a great Fuente, try the Don Carlos blend. Never disappoints.

I love the Gran Reserva personally...

The Fuente's arguably produce the most consistant cigars on the market, not to mention, make ALOT of stuff for everyone else.

I'd try another one for sure...

Re: A. Fuente Gran Reserva.....terrible?

I had the same stick (Fuente Double Chateau) the other night and liked it so much I bought a box of churchills the next day on Cigarmonster. It was incredibly creamy and delicious, burned great. Sounds like you got a bad stick or it just needed a few more months of rest?

Sorry to hear about that, I hope it doesn't spoil your view of the maker.

Hey man smoke what you like, if you loved the Cuesta Ray then keep smoking them. Funny thing is that A. Fuente makes the Cuesta Ray.

Re: A. Fuente Gran Reserva.....terrible?

I had one of those last night as well, mine was great, I tend to like all of their cigars though. I would say try a Hemingway, better yet - what kind of cigars do you tend to like? Wrapper, filler, etc.? I'm sure if you post up what you like Fuente makes a cigar to fit the profile, and the BOTL's on here can point you to that blend.

Re: A. Fuente Gran Reserva.....terrible?

I really enjoy the Cuesta Rey #95 (cameroon) and 8-9-8 (conneticut), both have dominican binder and fillers. And I know Cuesta Rey is made by Arturo Fuente.

I'm thinking I either got a bad one (too young), or smoked it too fast, or a combination of both

I would still say try a Hemingway (cam wrap) for me these are just classic, great cigars.

Re: A. Fuente Gran Reserva.....terrible?

Hey 04, Kind of off topic but where do you buy your sticks in Lancaster? I just started working there a few weeks ago. Demuth's was a bust. Olde world Tobacco on Lincoln highway seems like a decent place.
