Padilla Habano

I snagged a box of these from CI when they had their fire sale (of sorts) because the manufacturer sent boxes of 20 when CI had ordered boxes of 24. I'm not normally a box buyer, but because of the price and the reputation of the maker I pulled the trigger.

Initial impression - These are very well-made, substantial cigars. From the attractive yellow, red and gold band to the smooth chocolate-brown wrapper, everything about the sticks makes a good first impression. Pre-light draw was very open, so I could tell that draw wouldn't be a problem.

First third - A strong spice kicked in almost immediately. You can tell that this is a complex smoke, with a lot of flavors going on - so many that I couldn't discern individual ones apart from a scent that smelled a bit like burning hickory.

Second third - The spice has mellowed a bit, but it's still there in substantial quantities. The stick continues to defy description in terms of flavor, but it is very enjoyable.

Home stretch - No burn or wrapper issues whatsoever as this great cigar satisfies from beginning to end.

This cigar is well worth the money, especially at the bargain prices you can get on CI now. I may have to pick up another box before the price goes up.

Re: Padilla Habano

I had a really bad stick a few weeks ago. Horrible burn, and was almost borderline sour - I had to kill it at about 50%. I've got another in the humi so I'll give it another shot soon.

Thanks for the review and pointing out this deal. That is a great price on these, (I never believe those "miskate" stories) but a great deal at any rate, I am going to get a box, thanks again.

Re: Padilla Habano

I tried this stick yesterday as well. Perfect burn and great ash. For me the stick primarily had a grassy taste, but the taste and spice intensity mixed with other flavors, and seemed to constantly be changing. Its seemed as though after every 3-4 puffs the flavors would change a lil. It deffinatly kept me interested all the way through the smoke.

Ok you are going to think I'm crazy but comparing construction of the Padilla Habano vs the Padilla Miami that I have smoked.. I've had much much better luck with the Padilla Habano but.. with that said the Miami is much fuller flavor and different.. Its hard to compare the two but from my experience even though its a cheaper cigar the Habano is better made

That was my exact impression. Every time I thought I had the flavor nailed down, it seemed to quickly morph into something else. It was perhaps the most complex smoke I've had in terms of a constantly changing experience.

Me, neither - especially "This manufacturer screwed up our order years ago, but these cigars became one of our best sellers so now we have them made like this." I highly doubt that a company with quality controls like Padilla would make such an elementary mistake as putting the wrong number of sticks in every box of an entire order, but if CI makes this up as an excuse to give me a good deal, great. The box I got didn't look like four more sticks would have fit in it.

If I were the manufacturer and the mistake wasn't real, I probably wouldn't appreciate the implication that I had a bunch of screw ups running the company, though.
