Rocky Patel Ocean Club

My thanks to Shuckins for gifting the stick for this review.

Initial impression - Very well constructed, like every Patel I've ever picked up. Smooth, dark brown wrapper, felt substantial without any soft spots. Pre-light draw was easy and smooth.

First third - I could swear that there was a subtle flavor that was cooling the smoke. I hesitate to call it menthol - it wasn't that strong. It had an open feel (not to be confused with an overly loose draw), like a cool breeze. There seemed to also be a hint of ocean spray - like the smell of the ocean when you stand next to it. It may sound a little cliche given the name of the cigar, but it was there.

Second third - The smell was like evergreen - like fir trees in the mountains after a light rain, very subtle.

Home stretch - It was almost as if the cigar decided, "Enough with the whimsical smells. Let's give this boy a finish." A buzz began to set in, and a delicate woody smell filled the air. I'm not great at detecting individual flavors in a cigar (perhaps because my nose is so sensitive to smoke and I can't inhale much of it without it burning), but there were several in this cigar.

There were no burn or draw issues with this stick, and only very light flaking of the wrapper around the middle - perhaps because of the way I was holding it.

One thing I've noticed in the Rocky Patel blends I've smoked thus far is consistency throughout. The flavor I start with is usually the flavor I finish with. Not so with this one. The flavor evolved throughout the smoke and it held my interest to the end, something RP blends have not always done. The nub is sitting in my ashtray.

I can see myself buying some of these.

Re: Rocky Patel Ocean Club

The past ten years I've found only a few makers whose cigars consistently make me happy. Maybe the occasional bad burn, or a slightly tough draw, etc. But never anything that ruins the experience. Or any "buyers remorse" afterwards.

They are.......standard Padron maduros as well as the 1964's and 1926's, Padilla's, most anything by Don Pepin and ROCKY PATEL's.

Just can't seem to go wrong with any of them for my taste.

Don't know if I would like a menthol or ocean spray taste in a cigar. But thats for the review, you did a great job!

Re: Rocky Patel Ocean Club

Yay! Been waiting for this review! Sounds good. I had a feeling it was going to be like that fresh ocean smell/taste.

Holts the only one who carries these so far? Is it an exclusive?

5 G.A.R. "M5"
5 La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero 600
5 Old Henry Maduro Toro
5 Rocky Patel Ocean Club Torpedo

$70.00, Pretty nice price. I really liked the Old Henry I had, its made by Pepin, can't wait to try the maduro. I've also heard good things about the G.A.R. and La Flor Dominicana.

5 Rocky Patel Decade Toro
5 Rocky Patel Ocean Club Toro
5 Rocky Patel Sun Grown Toro
5 Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Toro

$75.00. Decade and 1992 are great smokes. Haven't had the Sun Grown yet. Pretty good value. Not sure if I'd take this or the other.

Boy, if one cigar can do all that I wouldn't need to go on vacation lol.

Just teasing with ya! Thanks for the review. Been wondering about this stick since I saw it on the cover of Holt's catalog.
