Oliva Serie V Belicosos

Cigar: Oliva Serie V Belicoso
Year: 2008
Cutter: Xikar
Lighter: Ronson Jet-Lite
Beverage: Coke Zero

As most of you have probably noticed, I am not a huge fan of this cigar. I think the lancero is an outstanding smoke that outshines the rest of the line by far. I am always one to revisit a cigar and give it more than one chance to tickle my fancy so I am going into this with an open mind.

Pre-cut: Cigar has a nice medium brown wrapper and appears to be constructed well. Pre-light draw has a little bit of spice to it along with some woodsy taste.

1st third: Lit easily. some faint spice and just a bit of wood. Clouds of smoke on every puff. The burn is staright and the cigar so far seems to be well constructed. Not a lot going on in the flavor department but there is still plenty more to go.

2nd third: Well the nicotine content in this cigar is not lacking. Wish I could say the same for the flavor. Spice and wood have completely disappeared and now it is just a plain tobacco taste. Not that that is terrible but for a cigar rated as highly as his I do expect some flavor and a little complexity. The only sensation on the nose exhale is a burning one.

Final third: The flavor of the cigar is still predominatly tobacco. The finish is very short and flat. Leaves no aftertaste in the mouth whatsoever, good or bad. The burn is still straight and the draw is still perfect. This is not a terrible cigar but there are so many more I could get for less money that blow it out of the water.

Overall this cigar just furthers my opinion that the V is subpar except for the lancero. It is one dimesional with a short, flat finish. It seems as though it was made with just the strength in mind and the flavor be damned. I think I will be staying away from this line in the future unless it is a lancero.

I know many here like these so please remember that this is just one mans opinion.

Thanks for the review. I have some of the Torpedo and Dbl. Robusto size and really enjoy them. I read your raves about the lancero in another post recently too and am excited to try that size.

Hey Donny. Did you see the Monster deal on the lancero's the other day. I was going to order but wasn't sure if it was for 24 or 36. There was discrepancy on the quantity. Anyone order these?

Didn't see it Jeff. To be honest I am not in any financial shape to be placing online orders at the moment anyway.

Re: Oliva Serie V Belicosos

Solid review you gave. I have taken some flack for thinking the exact thoughts you had on this cigar as it just doesn't float my boat. I have tried this cigar several times only because others thought this was a really good cigar. I found it lacking in taste as well and at times felt like I was smoking a roll of paper towels. Too many other cigars out there to try for my money and time.

Have you tried the Lancero yet Gary?

Re: Oliva Serie V Belicosos

Next to the LFD Double Ligero this is my favorite cigar. I truly do not agree with your review. I find woody character throughout the second and final third of this cigar.

One of the most balanced cigars I've had.

But that's why some people like vanilla and some like chocolate.

Great review and pics, thanks! I'm a huge fan of the lancero, but must admit I've never explored other vitolas.

Yeah, I failed to mention that this particular size was better only because of the size. It still is not really a flavorful cigar in that it was at best a medium flavor and my tastes run with a full bodied and strength cigar. That is what you get when you have smoked for as long as I have,,,,just about anything medium and below doesn't get my motor running. If you are newer to cigars mild to medium cigars are going to please you a lot more than a medium to full cigar.

Re: Oliva Serie V Belicosos

Nice review Donnie. I was considering buying a box of these. Might have to reconsider that.
Thanks for the review.
